Broken Crayons

The Broken Crayons…Still Color Project (BCSCP) by Healthy Heritage Movement (HHM) goal is to provide education, information dissemination, and outreach related to reducing mental health disparities and stigma among African-American (AA) women in Riverside and San Bernardino counties. The project will develop six mental health ministries in Black churches comprising of five components. The components consist of the training (curriculum), congregation focused education and outreach, mental health resource guide, community outreach, and mental health awareness promoted through the Mind Your Health Advocates. The project will provide a continuum of culturally responsive faith-based mental prevention, early intervention, and education developed and facilitated by AA women.
The individuals delivering and participating in the BCSCP are twelve (12) trained facilitators; six of them will have an academic background in Marriage and Family, Social Work, or Clinical Counseling. These individuals will be paired with six lay persons with life experience with mental illness and treatment. These selected AA places of worship represent 34 churches across the two-county region referred to as the Inland Empire, which maintain active health ministries or have community engaged congregations. African-American churches remain the community hub for AA social connectedness. The church is a vehicle to deliver message related to mental health and wellness, improving mental health outcomes, and social community services (Stanton-Tindall, Duvall, Steven-Watkins, & Oser).
