Brookside Milk Company
INTRODUCTION
Brookside is a well-known entity in the East African business world. The history of the company is essentially the tale of milk procurement, processing and marketing; the last fifteen years the company has been in existence clearly demonstrate how the company grew from a small processing plant in the outskirts of Kenya 's Capital Nairobi, to a giant East African organization (Brookside Dairy Limited, 2011).
Brookside collects some 95% of Kenya’s milk and processes it in their Ruiru plant then they distribute their wide range of well-known dairy and related products through 3 national distribution depots and 200 large agents, and over 300 sub agents to over 200,000 outlets in East Africa (Brookside Dairy Limited, 2011).
Brookside has set the benchmark for dairy quality in East Africa and this was confirmed when they scooped the coveted Quality Management awards at the Company of the Year Awards (COYA) in 2006 (Quality Management Practice) and 2007 (Supply Chain Management) (Brookside Dairy Limited, 2011).
They have also received additional numerous prestigious awards both locally and internationally among these are ISO Certification - they were the first Dairy Company in East and Central Africa to be awarded this world-class award in recognition for their quality handling of their wide range of products (Brookside Dairy Limited, 2011).
Brookside products have been broken down into four categories, that is
Farm fresh goodness products which are: Farm Fresh Standard Milk, Farm Fresh Whole Milk and Crate-o-Milk. Long Life Products which are: Whole Milk, Flavored Milk, and Low Fat milk. Cultured Products which are: Lala, Cup Yoghurt and Tetra pack Yoghurt. Cream Products which are: Butter, Whipping Cream, Double Cream, and Ghee (Brookside Dairy Limited, 2011).

In the fall of 1978, Vince Roth, General Manager of the Clover Valley Dairy Company, was considering whether a newly developed multipack carrier for yogurt was ready for market testing and, if so, how it should be tested. Since 1930, the Clover Valley Dairy Company had sold, under the trade name Valleyview, milk, ice cream, and other milk by-products—such as yogurt, cottage cheese, butter, skim milk, buttermilk, and cream—in Camden, New Jersey. The raw milk was obtained from independent farmers in the vicinity of Camden and was processed and packaged at the Clover Valley Dairy. Clover Valley’s sales had grown steadily from 1930 until 1973 to an annual level of $3.75 million. However, between 1973 and 1977, a series of milk price wars cut the company’s sales to $3.6 million by 1977. During this time, a number of other independent dairies were forced to close. At the height of the price wars, milk prices fell to 75 cents per half-gallon. In the spring of 1977, an investigation of the milk market in Camden was conducted by the Federal Trade Commission and by Congress. Since then, prices had risen so that Clover Valley had a profit for the year to date. Clover Valley served approximately 130 grocery store accounts, which were…
