Developing an organisation culture where the employees share a healthy working relationship is very crucial in any type of business. Similarly, in this project, building a team which all the members respect and value each other’s contribution to the project is important for making this project successful.
Firstly, gaining the support of the volunteers is important to promote effective team working. Team building activities will be crucial to bring existing and new volunteers together, and to familiarise the new Voluntary Services Manager with the volunteers. It is well known that every time a new member of a team joins, the team progresses through Bruce Tuckman’s Model of team development (1965), which includes the stages of forming, storming, norming and performing. Activities such as staff and volunteers tea break during the day, celebrating birthdays of the paid staff and volunteers and a coffee club each week, for volunteers to drop in and share their experiences with each other and the staff will be organised. Sessions such as music therapy for relaxation and stress management will also be organised. Also, shared lunch between the staff and the volunteers once every three months will be organised. All these informal team building activities mentioned above will ensure that volunteers get to know the paid members of staff that are involved in patient
