The next song is Give Me One Reason by Tracy Chapman. This is one of my favorite songs, because the sound of it speaks to my soul. It reached #3 on the US Billboard Hot 100 in 1996 making it Chapman’s biggest US hit to date. Although it is a break up song, it is more of a plea for a reason to not give up on the relationship. The conclusion of the song though is the partner stating that love was already proclaimed and there is nothing left to say.…

From Alfalfa’s letter in The Little Rascals, “Dear Darla, I hate your stinking’ guts. You make me vomit. You are scum between my toes. Love, Alfalfa,” to the song Love Stinks by the J. Geils Band, it is apparent that heartache is felt by everyone. It can be experienced and dealt with in countless ways, but its universally-felt agony is what allows poets, singers, and writers to connect with their audiences in such a personal manner. In the poem “Getting Through,” Deborah Pope uses poetic techniques to make a personal experience accessible to a range of audiences. “The greatest Music comes from an emotional identification with those that do not have.”- Musician Brandford Marsalis. In this quote Marsalis is stating that Music is supposed to be familiar to people in the same emotional situation. Singing about being broken when you have money does not benefit your audience. Everyone has had a bruise, some of them last longer than others, but they always disappear. Scars, just as Leav writes, leave marks. Both are painful, but one leaves you with the reminder that you were once hurt. When you truly love someone and things don’t work out, you are left with hurt, and pain, confusion, and frustration. “We had no ending, no said goodbye. For all my life, I'll wonder why.” It’s a different type of pain to feel confusion; to never really know why you can’t have the one person you want, to never feel closure. For those who have dealt with never knowing why things ended, they will always have a scar. “What was it like to lose him?" Asked Sorrow. There was a long pause before I responded: It was like hearing every goodbye ever said to me—said all at once.” If you think about all of the times you’ve had to say goodbye to someone you love, you realize that goodbyes are hard and they can be emotionally draining. Imagine all the emotion you feel from all the goodbyes ever experienced, hearing them all at once could wreck a soul. The scars heal, the reminder is there but “Over time she will learn, not to miss them.” It’s not easy missing someone you can’t have, anyone that has experienced this knows and can relate to her writing. It goes hand in hand with the old saying, “time heals all wounds.” With time the pain subsides, and eventually you…
