Project1 :Case study – ABC Chemicals.
In summary ABC Chemicals purchase large quantities of cleaning chemicals made up of solvents,acids and corrosives and detergents.They then decant these large quantities into smaller containers and relabeled the product and distribute to retail.
Upon further analysis of the case study of ABC Chemicals and their associated business and activities it has become apparent that there are a number of hazards and risks that can be identified and need to be assessed and either eliminated or controlled using various legislative measures and codes of practice relevant to their industry type as they have to maintain compliance.
Some of the immediate NON conformances that have been identified are:
- Legislative: There is no mention of ABC Chemicals being a registered business with NICNAS (National Industrial Chemical Notification Assessment Scheme)which is the Australian regulatory department responsible for the regulation of all importers or manufacturers of chemicals in Australia regardless or the amounts of chemicals imported or manufactured.
Legal authority
NICNAS administers the ICNA Act, as well as the Industrial Chemicals (Notification and Assessment) Regulations 1990 and the Cosmetics Standard 2007. The ICNA Act provides a number of enforcement powers to NICNAS.
Objectives
The objectives of the NICNAS are to provide a national assessment and notification scheme for the following purposes:
• Assisting in the protection of the Australian people and the environment from the harmful effect of industrial chemicals,
• Offering information and making recommendations about chemicals to workers, industry, the community and other regulatory agencies,
• Providing effect to Australia’s obligations under international agreements relating to the regulation of chemicals
• Assembling statistics in relation to chemicals
