Self-esteem is part of every individual’s personality characteristics and defines a person’s sense of worth. While some people have a healthy level of self-esteem, others suffer from low levels, which are known to be a factor in the development of psychological disorder. To alleviate them, self-esteem levels needs to be raised, which is possible due to the fact that low self-esteem is seen as an illness and can be cured.

Self-esteem is an essential component and while most people have heard of the word, not everyone knows or understands the exact meaning of it. The following paper explains self-esteem, how it is acquired, reasons for developing low self-esteem, how it relates to psychological disorders, and ways to improve self-esteem to alleviate them. Explaining the meaning of self-esteem is not exactly an easy task. Different components have to be taken into consideration, such as psychological and sociological dimensions. While some perceive self-esteem as a psycho-dynamic process provided by the brain, others see it as a cognitive-behavior skill that is learned. It can also be explained as one’s attitude towards certain things. An overall statement of the general meaning agrees on combining different elements to describe self-esteem, such cognitive, affective, and behavioral. Overall, it can be defined as one’s sense of competence and self-worth. Differentiation needs to be made between healthy and unhealthy self-esteem. Healthy self-esteem is earned through successes and overcoming trial while unhealthy self-esteem comes from success that is given and can easily turn into narcissism, which is known to be connected to violent behaviors and bullying.
