Bureaucracy- A system of government where the state officials (non-elected civil servants) make the important decisions. Bureaucracy is usually referred to as complicated and disorganized. It does, however, allow a country to make a great amount of money through taxes, this is why a bureaucracy in more common during a time of war. Leaders of empires use ways such as common religion or culture to keep a grasp on all subjects within the empire. However, most empires result from war in which cities from other countries are annexed into the empire, often making it hard for people to embrace a new culture into their land. There are two types of empires; thalassocracies(maritime) and territorial. Territorial are often more compacted together on the same landmass, and thalassocracies are ruled over a body of water. The most famous thalassocracy is Great Britain(early 1600s-early 1900s) and one of the most famous territorial is the Chinese Empire(200 BC-early 1900s). Today there are no empires.
Feudalism- A social system used by any countries during the Medieval Era(400-1300) where serfs(peasant workers) were obliged to give the king labor, a portion of the produce, and homage in return for protection. The military, often called noblemen, fought in the name of the king in exchange for land. The leader (matriarch) is usually the dominant member, founder, or decedent of the founder of the community. Relationships are determined through the female line. Basically, the women are more dominant then men in this social belief. Today, many tribes in India and Africa are matriarchal societies. Minangkabau, a very large society in West Sumatra, Indonesia, is primarily matriarchal. There are no known(popular) religions that are matriarchal.
Medieval- Usually referring to the Middle Ages or between the years of 500AD-1500AD. During this time period, the Holy Roman Empire was established, the First Crusade was launched, and the Black Death ravaged through Europe. Oxford University was also established and Mohammed was born. No major scientific advances took place during this time, probably because it was a time of many wars.
Metallurgy- The science or process of working metals by heating them to mold them into desired shapes and sizes. This science is also the technique of purifying ores, combining different metals, and compounding alloys. This science made it a lot more easy to make close combat weapons or metal tools, because it was easy to make sharper points or blades.
