In understanding the Johari Window model and researching other materials, has given me a better understanding of self. In applying the theory of J. Luft, Of Human Interaction, the blind area, façade, area and unknown, not only do I recognize how I view myself but how others may view me. I have created a profile in which I firmly believe embraces the characteristics of my personality based on the assessments.
Profile
I have many skills, attributes and a wide array of personal characteristics that make up my profile. I am mild mannered and tempered. My performance peaks when I am under a time constraint. I am dependable and considered a team player. I am honest and value integrity. I do not follow rules to the “T” but I am ethical. I believe that there are a lot of gray areas. I enjoy problem solving and being considered as an asset. Time keeping is a characteristic I lack, I make list and I am well organized however I tend to be tardy. I pride myself on high performance however I tend to take the shortcuts.
According to our text book Organization Behaviors it mentions organizational climates, as it relates to the way members percieve the organization. I relate more to the informal climate and the assessment attributes to that as well. I prefer a more relaxed climate and free flowing communication. The self-assessment was scored on (6) six segments. The first was a twenty-first century manager. I have self-awareness and consistency attitude. I accept change as being a part of the new normal of today’s work force. In the category I scored well. However I need to hone my skills to progress successfully in my career. In the second segment of TT Style transitional and category I am evenly dispersed. I have attributes that resemble the transformational leader such as being charismatic, motivational as well as intellectual. Contrary to the attributes that resemble the role of a transactional leader, such as working off of reward system, giving constructive criticism, and unwavering beliefs in discipline process or corrective actions.
The third segment intuitive ability I am very much comfortable with, I scored high. I have the ability to use intuition often in my thought process as well as leadership skills. The fourth segment time management strategies, now as I mentioned in my profile I struggle in this category. I have a poor sense of time management. I am often running late despite a schedule or organization. This is something that I must restructure in order to enhance or progress in the work force. Just like the saying, the early bird gets the worm! I need to look at things from the employer side because a lack of preparation is not a characteristic that is attractive. The fifth segment organizational design preference according to the results I am comfortable with the organic design. Research suggests that companies are there worst enemies, with this being said, I understand that as a member of management I must have a balance. I must also have the ability to integrate ideas of differentiation and integration. In the last segment, which culture fits you, I was identified as a fortress. In being a member of this category I do not want to be recognized by the time or tenure I served with the company but more for the skills I possess. I also enjoy moving forward in my career.
Many skills or qualities are valid in any field. However some are unique to the particular fields or career paths. In my career choice I feel that he attributes described earlier rate to them fairly. Every job requires the ability to solve problems and exemplify good work ethics.
In the book Guerilla Marketing for Job Hunting 3.0 there is a passage it states, “You would care less about what other people think of you if you knew how much time they spent thinking of you.” Before I even read that passage, I have been practicing it.
I can credit that same attitude or way of thinking to the way that I behave in the workforce. In reviewing my career path as and I coordinator I must be an effective communicator. It is crucial that I always have my attitude in check. I assume everyone I come in contact with is intelligent, stay motivated and have a genuine passion for what I do. I always take the iniative, listen to my customers and respond accordingly. Not only am I great with the customers but the employees and upper management as well. I am very responsible; I see projects thru to completion in a timely manner. I am a perfectionist at heart. I not only do my job because I have to but because I want to. I am honest and operate with integrity. I tell the truth even when I need to deliver bad news whether is to a customer or employer. A good employee such as me must keep commitments and special exceptions. Whether it be returning a follow up phone calls or reporting for a special project In handling my everyday task of dealing with customers. It is important that I show empathy or sympathy depending on the situation, seeming I deal with a variance of issues. Simply taking the time out to acknowledge someone else’s well-being shows that you care. However being or using all the attributes I mentioned above may not be easy to do all the time, it is beneficial to my employer or any employer for that part. It has allowed me to have high appraisals, afforded me work opportunities and the ability to be networked or marketable across many verticals in my career choice, which will later lead to job
advancement.
