Two nations arose from the ashes of the Third Reich, West Germany, the BDR, occupied by the Western members of the Allied powers, and East Germany, the GDR, occupied by the Soviet Union. As a result of conflicting ideals between East and West, the two Germany’s would develop separately until their eventual reunification at the end of the 20th century. It is an indisputable fact that German culture was forever changed as a result of the outcome of World War II, and the horrors perpetrated by Adolf Hitler’s Third Reich. From the moment of surrender onwards, the culture of Germany would begin to be defined by the occupiers of Germany. In West Germany, this influence was spear-headed by American implementation of the Marshall Plan. While the Marshall…

My interest in traveling to and participating in a study tour of Germany stems most currently from my fervent study and passionate teaching of Advanced Placement (AP) European History; yet the genesis of this interest began decades earlier. In the 1950s my mother grew up in Munich as an Army brat while my grandfather was a full Colonel of the United States Army stationed at U.S. Army Garrison Munich after World War II. The images of my mother ice skating on frozen ponds and my grandfather's collection of beer steins and paintings of German pastoral scenes made me curious about this place half way around the globe. As a teen I traveled to Frankfurt with my father and toured the city on our way to Greece, the land of my ancestors. In Frankfurt am Main I witnessed the striking architecture and impressive industry of the city. In my childhood I sang in choirs and played on the piano the works of the great German composers Beethoven, Brahms and Mozart. Today my cousin who is a U.S. Army Lt. Colonel and his wife are currently stationed in Stuttgart soon to move to Vilseck in the Bavarian region of Germany.…

Crisp makes a credible argument that the Pongo Peach and Grecian Formula 16 ads were guilty of overriding the consumers' autonomy because they deceived the consumer by leading them to believe that the products were better than what they were. They used the consumer’s insecurities about themselves to make their products more appealing, causing the consumer to act on desires, rather than rationality. The problem with this type of advertising is that when people take a chance on something based on impulse, rather than facts. They risk their autonomy, which makes them want to purchase the product. I believe that Crisp’s rebuttal of Arrington’s four notions is valid. Autonomous desire is the first desire and fulfills the second desire, which is rational desire and choice. Free choice is the third desire, and finally, the fourth desire is control or manipulation. When it comes to the morality of “subliminal” advertising, my opinion is that it is simply business, and if business are going to profit, they have to use whatever tactic necessary to sell their product.…

    German Ethos

Communal ethos seems to be the critical reason for the German’s success. After the loss of the infamous Nazi party in the Second World War, German reunified at a high speed, especially in manufacturing. While England is still complacent with its victory, Germany economy began to thrive over the past few years. The place once used for the assembly of the Nazi rally has an ambivalence use now for profane applications. A British couple was eager to find out the reason for German’s success. A few, yet striking differences were discovered. First of all, their attitude towards money is an obvious contrast. German has fewer mortgages compare to the Britain. Then, is the social state of mothers. German moms are strongly encouraged to be wholly devoted…

During the summer after my tenth grade year, I was notified of my acceptance into the Congress-Bundestag Youth Exchange program. I was overjoyed. I am incredibly passionate about travelling and exploring different cultures. It was a scholarship only awarded to 250 students across the nation. The program was a fully funded year abroad in Germany. I attended a German high school, I lived with a German host family, and I struggled through the challenges of learning the German language. Before my feet touched the German ground, I could only speak two German words. With this exceptional grasp of the language, I set out into the new world that was Germany. I began to discover the great lengths to which we take our knowledge of the English language…

With the help of this award, I will be able to open my sights by travelling and studying in Germany in the coming semester. As we all know, education is the one of the pillars linking Singapore and Germany, especially at the university level. The German-speaking Community has several own institutions. The most important are the Council of the German-speaking Community (Rat der Deutschsprachigen Gemeinschaft) and the executive which consists of three members (Delpérée 1986: 77). The member of the council elect the executive members. The German-speaking Community is responsible for “culture, education, (…) the cooperation between the communities and international cooperation” (translated from the original Delpérée 1986: 80).
