There are several pots and they look liked they were empty. We know this because an elderly lady is holding a small pot in the air, on an angle. If the pots weren't empty we would be able to see something coming out, but her facial expressions reinforce this idea. Again, the image is in sepia tone referring to the past.
The illustrator usually places full-sized images when the scene is being amplified. Anh’s family and the other 36 people had just survived a storm and all their food and water supplies were nearly finished. At this point everyone was just hanging on the edge of survival. The picture fills up one whole page because the illustrator wanted to symbolise how serious their situation was, so basically the bigger the situation, the bigger the picture.
The next page is about getting their boat attacked by some pirates. At first Anh’s uncle thought that a boat was here to save them, but, a fisherman jumped out with a gun and threatened them to sit down. The pictures turned more realistic relating to real life situations. Khao, was holding a small slice of gold in is nappy. The pirate found out and held him over the boat threatening to throw him over into the water. As a team, all the people stood up to the pirate to save a baby’s life. The fact that they all teamed up to save a baby's life from a man with a gun made them very courageous and bold. They were ready to fight even though they were thirsty and starving
