In the story “By The Waters of Babylon” author, Stephen Vincent Benèt, talks about a man by the name of John, and how the decision he made changed his life forever. John had to make a decision when he came across a river. You could not cross it if you were purified. However, John was not, but he still made the decision to cross the river. John comes to learn that some things happen for a reason, but it can only make you stronger. John came to learn a very valuable lesson. The lesson was, never do something that you know feels wrong. John came to a point where he had to make a very tough decision. He had to decide whether he was going to go across the river. It is forbidden to cross the river unless you are purified,
and John was not. “It is forbidden to cross the great river and look upon the place that was the Place of the Gods -- this is most strictly forbidden.” (9). “It is there that spirits live, and demons -- it is there that there are the ashes of the Great Burning. These things are forbidden -- they have been forbidden since the beginning of time.” (9) John ultimately made the decision to cross the river. He was very nervous and afraid at the same time though. John had been taught many new spells that he never heard of before. He also learned new things and met new people. “It had been made of white stone and he wore his hair tied back like a woman's. His name was ASHING” (5). “I knew the reason for the Dead Places but I did not see why it had happened. It seemed to me it should not have happened, with all the magic they had.” (8) Through this whole experience of crossing the river and making that big decision, John learns to always make smart choices because it can affect your life forever. The message this story is trying to get across is do what you feel is best for yourself. The value of this story is, learn from your mistakes, because it can only make you stronger
