Instead of really having one person making the rules and the punishments for Buck, Buck is working alongside him, at the same level. The moment when John Thornton and Buck met marked the end of the dog’s involvement with Mercedes, Hal, and Charles. Hal was whipping the poor animals too harshly, and John felt that he had to intervene. Buck was left with him, gratefully recovering. Continuing on without him, the team of sled dogs raced over the ice. Suddenly, the whole section of ice caves in, the team disappearing. Now, it’s just John and Buck.
