It is very interesting that when you are being with your friends or other people, you will see the differences of their characteristics. I always observe people’s behaviors and realize that most people who are generous, friendly and easy to make friends are multiple siblings and people who are confident, ambitious and hard to make friends are only children. It seems to be impossible that being multiple siblings or being an only child are not related to their personalities, but according to a psychological study, being an only child and multiple siblings can influence on personalities.
An only child is a person who has no siblings and the one who gets attention from parent. Only children never have to use their effort to make their parents be interested in. Parents only have one responsibility to pay for education fees, cloths, food, and toys. But they are only one expectation of their parents, and have pressure to be successful at the same time. These are the reason why only children have confident, ambitious, and self-motivated personalities. They can set their goals clearly, go straight to achieve and don’t have to worry about anything. Sometimes, they seem to be little selfish and hard to make friends because they’ve never learned to help and share anything with brothers or sisters. There are no sibling rivalries and no competitions for things and their parents’ attention and affection, but they feel really lonely.
Multiple siblings have faster development than an only child because children with siblings always learn from other’s mistakes, and elders often teach younger siblings. Multiple siblings have less pressure to be successful than an only child. They can live their lives more comfortable than an only child because their parents have many offspring to expect for. They learn how to help, how to share, how to work, and how to live with others, so they are friendly, generous, considerate, easy to makes friends, and not lonely. But multiple siblings are spread their parents’ attention and time. Thus, they are jealous of their siblings and have to use their effort to make parents be interested in. Moreover, multiple siblings always have sibling rivalries. When they were young, this problem is not a big deal to control, but when they become adults, it is hard to control and may be out of control such as when dividing heritage of their parents.
There are many factors that influence personalities of people such as environment where they are growing up, parents’ raising, and their attitudes about life. Knowing that people are only children or multiple siblings can help you to understand their personalities and understand people around you better but it isn’t only one factor that influence to people’s personalities.

Sibling rivalry is not too hard to find, but rarely does it reach an extreme level because the smaller probability of multiple siblings leads to adolescents that are more capable of handling relationships with peers, since they were not treated with any injustice due to their sibling, such as when a child has to give up their room, for their younger…

Firstly this essay will look at whether ‘only children’ display any difference in emotional and behavioural qualities to their counterparts with siblings. There have been many studies carried out to see if ‘only children’ exhibited different emotional and behavioural patterns to children with siblings. Falbo (1992) looked in to this, in an attempt to find out whether ‘only children’ where as emotionally stable as those children that had siblings. Falbo conducted a large number of studies and when collating the results found that only children scored higher than others on achievement, motivation and self-esteem. She also concluded that only children did not stand out from the crowd when looking at areas such as generosity, autonomy, anxiety and popularity. It was also found that only children were no more likely than others to get in to trouble at school. Another observation made by Falbo was that the home life of an only child was more likely to encourage intellectual activities, due to having an increased amount of…

Siblings often serve as the first extended social interaction with other children (Venatsanou & Kambas, 2010). Children with siblings are found to have more opportunities for social interactions as well as more mature play partners, while only children may be less prepared to manage conflicts with their peers (Newman & Newman, 2015). Alfred Adler even took it one step further and theorized that birth order of siblings greatly influences how they see the world. The position one occupies in a family can impact how one interacts with others (Corey, 2013). Clearly, siblings can have a profound influence on the development of a…

Personality is a frequently cited example of a heritable trait that has been studied in twins and adoptions. Identical twins reared apart are far more similar in personality than randomly selected pairs of people. Likewise, identical twins are more similar than fraternal twins. Each observation suggests that personality is heritable to a certain extent. However, these same study designs allow for the examination of environment as well as genes. Adoption studies also directly measure the strength of shared family effects. Adopted siblings share only family environment. This would mean that shared family effects on personality are zero by adulthood. As is the case with personality, non-shared environmental effects are often found to out-weigh shared environmental effects. That is, environmental effects that are typically thought to be life-shaping (such as family life) may have less of an impact than non-shared effects, which are harder to identify. One possible source of non-shared effects is the environment of pre-natal development. Random variations in the genetic program of development may be a substantial source of non-shared environment.…
