The young girl's left arm is bent in a position as she holds her hand higher resting a candy cigarette between her fingers and wears jewelry on her right wrist as that hand gets hidden underneath the left arm representing adulthood and her independence. The candy cigarette represents the real feature of having a real one lying between her fingers as if she is old enough to be independent, along with the jewelry on her wrist that represents she is more matured and has the responsibility to take take of that fine jewelry with out loosing it. Her messy, knotty, uncombed, light colored hair that lies along her head still, does not blow along the wind thinking it would as if she was trying to catch up to her brother. She wears this clean white dress that fits her well as if she dressed herself from choosing it out of her own wardrobe. She’s past puberty because her breasts have developed, and by her tilting over you can see that she has a defined waist and hips, so this could be her first experience with someone. Although this could be alluding to an experience, the feel of “Young Girl on Blanket” remains very pure and sweet. This young woman is sitting topless in a field but there is a shy beauty about her, she is shying away, but her slight smirk is endearing. I think that this is what the artist was trying to depict. The young girl is possibly sneaking out with someone and this is her first experience so she’s very shy and coy about it, but at the same time is excited and anticipating what’s to come, which is why she is still smiling…

Like almost other kids, she was trying to follow whatever her older brothers do. But because she is a girl, so instead of getting a gun, she could only play with her bow and arrow. This is the turning point of the story, when the “accident” happed and completely changed Alice’s life. She was shot in the eye by the BB gun of her brothers. The doctor said that Alice would likely to be blind, not only one but both eyes. She was terrified but what she care the most is not about whether she could see or not. It is her beautiful that she cared about. She scared how people would look at “the glop of whitish scar” on her eyes. She was no longer the prettiest and the cutest girl. For six years, Alice did not raise her head and stare at anyone. The scare took everything from her: her beauty, her pride and her person from inside. Alice asked her mother and sister whether she changed. What does she really mean by the word “change”? Her beauty or her personality? The answer was “no” but this was because Alice’s mother and sister did not want to hurt her or because they really thought that she had never changed? What they saw in her is her personality not her appearance. However, Alice at that time was only a little girl. I do not expect she will care or think deeper about things and people around her. The eight years old girl only cared that people would never admire or applauded her again. To the little Alice, beauty was too…

In the chapter, “The Cigarette” Satrapi uses a brilliant job of conducting image analysis within the reader by using extensive use of scale. One of the main ideas of this chapter is to describe how disgusted Satrapi is with the decisions the government is making: “When I think we could have avoided it all… It just makes me sick. A million people would still be alive.” (Satrapi 116) On this full page spread, Satrapi demonstrates her use of scale in multiple ways. First, Satrapi depicts a large amount of troops in the panel to stress to the reader just how many people died. As Satrapi told us in the the speech bubble at the bottom of the panel, it makes her sick that one million people have to die. Satrapi has gotten her idea of this across by showing a large number of people fighting in the panel to draw sympathy from the reader. Secondly, Satrapi makes this such a large panel to stress the importance of this topic to the readers. One million people dead is a big deal. Imagine all of…
