Capital punishment is the legally authorized killing of someone that committed a crime.
Many people agree with it as they believe that the death penalty is a deterrent to a crime, however many others would disagree with capital punishment and would not wish for it to return back to the UK.
Religious believers may believe that capital punishment should be legalised in the UK again as they may believe in the moral ‘an eye for an eye’, this is a religious teaching that has the same principle that what someone does to another (usually injuring another person), that they should be penalized to the same extent as the other person was.
Another reason that religious believers, especially Christians, may want the death penalty reinstated is because there is talk of it in the Bible.
In the New Testament in Mathew 15:4 Jesus says ‘he who speaks evil of father or mother, let him surely die’.
Jesus himself is therefore condoling the death sentences, even though he does not use violence himself he has no objection to the state using violence as a punishment.
However many religious believers do NOT agree with the death sentence because they believe that only God should be able to create and destroy life.
Many Christians believe that God commanded ‘thou shalt not kill’ and that there is no exception to this rule, so by killing a man without Gods permission you have then broken Gods rule to never kill another man.
Another reason that Christians do not believe that the death penalty is the fact that Jesus taught it the Bible to always be forgiving, he said ‘But I tell you... whoever slaps you on your right cheek, turn the other to him also.’ This shows that you should try to be better person and not sink down to the other person’s level.
Personally, I believe that the death penalty should be brought back to the UK but only for extreme cases in which the person is a danger to those around them if they live.
