Carbon is a part of your daily life
Carbon is a part of your daily life
Alice Cui E10M Carbon plays an essential role in people’s daily life. The cosmetics we use, the food additives we consume in snacks, the diamond we wear on our ring, the oil we use to fuel our cars, and even the DNA in our body are made up of carbon. The reason carbon exist in so many substances is its electron configuration. Carbon has 4 valence electrons and that means it can lose or gain electron to form stable structure easily. In this essay, I am going to focus on several organic compounds, which are fuels of various kinds, and discuss and evaluate their positive and negative impacts on its relevant environmental, economic, social, and health aspects. Alkane is a saturated hydrocarbon compound, which is, consists of C-C and C-H single bonds. Alkanes are highly combustible and it is a valuable fuel, and during combustion reaction, alkane can release a very large amount of heat and the product yield from this reaction is H2O (water), and CO2 (carbon dioxide) or CO (carbon monoxide), in which depends on whether the reaction is complete or incomplete. The first 4 alkanes, Methane, ethane, propane, and butane, are gases and can be used directly as fuel. Alkanes from pentane up to about decane can form gasoline in a specific proportion of mixture. Alkanes that have higher values of n can be found in diesel fuel, petroleum jelly, and motor fuel, and for the highest possible value of n, asphalt. To conclude, the longer the chain of alkane, the more bonds will be broken during combustion reaction and therefore, more energy will be release exothermically.
Even though alkane fuels contributed greatly to our modern transportations but it still have negative effects on people’s health. During complete combustion reaction of alkanes, the products yield are safe for human, but the products incomplete combustion reaction yield is not. If combustion is taking place incorrectly, it is very dangerous for people to be around. Carbon

The main factors of this article called “Methanol--the fuel in Waiting” explains how Methanol could both have positive and negative effects in the environment and the economy. The article discusses how methanol could be another alternative to gasoline and it is a made from natural gas, which makes it easier to make and use. Methanol (see Figure 1) is that it is the simplest alcohol with a chain of one carbon atom with three hydrogen atoms attached. The characteristics of this simple alcohol are that it is a light, volatile, and flammable liquid with a unique odor very similar to ethanol. Unlike ethanol, methanol is a highly toxic chemical and should be used cautiously because it causes negative reactions when exposed to other reagents such as lead. Methanol…

Energy is an important part of our everyday lives. Energy can come in many different types, and forms it can be used for many different purposes. Energy has many different usages and can be converted from one form of usage to another form of usage depending on what the need is. One form of energy conversion is the use of food to supply people 's bodies with energy. Another form of energy is how coal is converted into electricity. Fuel is another form of energy that can be used for many different usages as well. Fuel is used for much different reason such as allowing our cars to function and our lawnmowers to cut grass. There are many different reasons why people use energy in the many different ways that we use it. Even though people rely on energy usage, some of the forms of energy we use are very harmful to the environment and even dangerous to ourselves. The harmful and dangerous fuels that we use can be changed to alternative methods of energy usage. There are two different types of alternative energy, which is known as renewable energy. Renewable energy is very resourceful and is able to be used because it is all around us there will not be a shortage of material and it is safer on every living thing and being. Energy and fuel usage just like everything else in the world has its advantages and disadvantages about using it. We must collectivity figure out which source of energy is right for everyone but for now we will find out which is best to use in your area.…
