Practices of audio engineering have been around for over 125 years and in that time; much has changed. Audio engineering started with Thomas Edison’s recovering of Mary 's Little Lamb from a strip of tinfoil wrapped around a spinning cylinder ("An Audio Timeline"). Though very simplistic and different from today’s audio engineering: still a form of recording music. The basic definition of audio engineering is a part of the field of engineering which deals with the recording of sound and stores in some way to be reproduced at a later time. Audio engineering has a number of fields in itself, including cinema, studio recording, and live sound.
There are many ways to educate one’s self in the field of audio engineering. One way, and probably the most popular choice, is to earn a four-year degree at a University; much like the one that Middle Tennessee State offers its students. Another is start working with a studio right away. Most of the time you start doing little things to help out for little to no pay. This allows the engineer to learn hands on experience and work their way up to actually becoming an audio engineer. Through this experience they learn the necessary skills that go along with being an engineer. Lastly, is to get a technical degree from a school. Most of these degrees are a 1-2 year program that teaches all the necessary skills needed.
Live sound engineers deal with just that; live sound. Live sound engineers have to take in many factors while trying to get the perfect sounds for live events, shows, and concerts. A live sounds engineer is almost just as important as the band playing. Case and point being that if the engineer is not doing his job properly; then the band won’t be able to sound as best as they possibly can. Thus creating a less than satisfactory experience for the audience. Now live engineering is more than just balancing the volume of each individual instrument and vocal level
