The reason I have decided to research Carlos Slim is because he is currently the most wealthy man in the world and has been since 2010 according to the Forbes rich list. Carlos Slim was born in Mexico on the 28th January 1940. Carlos Slim has a net worth of $68.8 billion with $49 billion coming from America Movil which during 2010 was the main mobile phone carrier in Latin America. Carlos Slims parents are both from Lebanon descent, Carlos Slims father emigrated at the age of 14 to avoid being forced into the Ottoman army. Carlos’ mothers parents immigrated to Mexico in the late 19th century.

BUSINESS
Carlos along with his siblings were all taught basic business skills by their father at a very young age. At the age of 12 Carlos purchased shares in a Mexican bank and at the age of 17 was earning 200 pesos($15) working for his father. Carlos then went on to go to the national autonomous university of Mexico to study civil engineering. Whilst at the university he also taught algebra and linear programming there. Construction, real estate and mining businesses were the focus of his early career. By 1972 he had established a further seven businesses in these categories, including one which rented construction equipment.During 1985 there was a huge collapse in the Mexican economy. Carlos slim took full advantage of this and invested heavily and bought out several companies.

FORTUNE
On the 29th of march 2007 Slim had overtaken Warren Buffet as the second richest person in the world with an estimated net worth of $53.1 billion.
On the 8th of August 2007 Slim overtook Bill Gates as the world’s richest person for the first time, Slim, Buffet and Gates would continue to swap place on the Forbes rich list until March the 10th 2010. On March 2010 Slim became the richest man in the world and still remains at the number one spot with a net worth of $53.5 billion.
