Check this An Island Like You, by Judith Ortiz Cofer is about a bunch of teens who live in the barrio of New Jersey. The short stories you read throughout the book will show you how they come of age and learn values and connect to their heritage. One theme that I like is be thankful for those who keep bad influence away. This theme is portrayed in the stories of bad influences and catch the moon.…
One of the first quotes from “The Job Ghetto,” by Katherine Newman and Chauncy Lennon, suggest that the student who made the statement is a naive observer. The student suggested, “If people want to bad enough, they can get a job and make something of themselves. It might not be a great job, but at least, it’s a job. No one has to be poor in this society” (Newman and Lennon, 1995, 347). The student doesn’t quite understand the factors and variables that come into play when one goes out and searches for a job.…
In 19th century, the society was dominated by male. Edna Pontellier was the wife of Mr. Portlier who was a creole. In French upper class society, the purpose of life for female was taught to be fond of their husbands and children. Woman at that time never lived for themselves. Mrs. Pontellier's friend, Adele Ratignolle, was considered as the perfect woman in the society, because she was a great woman who treated her children better than herself.…
When people talk about the revolutionary war, they think of a bunch of men fighting. Not many people know that women actually did take part in the war and had a great influence in it. In “Revolutionary Mothers” by Carol Berkin, she writes about all of the different ways that women were affected by the war and how they influenced the war. Berkin explains with detail about the enormous workloads that women had before the war and the way it doubled during the war. The wives and sisters had to step up and take on the role of their men who left to fight in the war. Women were not only emotionally disturbed but physically as well due to the raids and…
Student paper (p. 3): The Awakening is about the story of a young wife who is awakened to her sexual needs that cannot be fulfilled within the confines of her conventional marriage (Clark, 2008). Nevertheless, Edna Pontellier is awakened to a yearning for freedom, a relation to and understanding of herself that she has not been aware of missing in the past. In the text, Edna identifies with the masculine interest of her father who the narrator remarks had managed or coerced his wife into her early grave. However, when Edna is awakened to the hidden potentialities she possesses, it is the yearning for freedom and the desire to overcome the limitations imposed on her from outside that determine her actions.…
HOMS Theme Essay Growing up, everyone expects it as this unbelievably spontaneous thing . In Sandra Cisneros book “The house on Mango Street” states that growing up can happen to people variously, in good and bad ways. In the pages 46- 57 there is a lot of growing up in many of the characters especially Esperanza. Esperanza gets her first job, during her break time she mingles with an oriental man; “ He grabs my face with both hands and kisses me hard on the mouth,”(55).…
In her book "How Jews Became White Folk", Karen Brodkin examines the question of how Jews came to be regarded as White. She does this by first explaining how Jews were racially categorized prior to this time, and how they were considered to be inferior to the white race. Whiteness is and has always relied on continually renegotiated interpretations; that has more to do with ones social class rather than skin color. The argument that Brodkin presents is that the claim of whiteness are extended to certain races or ethnic groups at certain times, and that the past experiences of these groups cannot wipe away such indisputable social facts.…
In this roller coaster of a book, I am currently on page 326 out of 537. The author of this book is Ellen Hopkins. When I started this book I thought it was just another story about a teenager that didn’t have any friends but that all changed when she went to Nevada. Throughout this journal I will be visualizing, predicting and questioning.…
Author Ronald Wright is billed as an historian and novelist. An archeology major, Wright seems drawn to history as he attempts to educate readers about the past and its connection to the present and our future in his book, A Short History of Progress. Despite the title, Wright’s purpose is to show his audience that, like the ancient civilizations, we are doomed to extinction unless we can create sustainability. He creates a dramatic and fear-inducing tone to convey to readers the idea that progress is dangerous and unless we learn to tame it, we are all doomed to extinction.…
Sara M. Evans' Born for Liberty is the book that deciphers the real, previously obscured meaning of the role of women in America. It is more than obvious that women were the "men's pleasure " only, and before they were referred as the ignorant part of the world. The vision people, usually men, had about women was one that expressed lucidly that women lacked a kind of intelligence and ability to do something politically or manly done. What I believe Sara M. Evans is trying to imply through her introduction part of the book is that no matter how unfair it might have been to be considered that way, it is time for us, as women, to prove them wrong, and we have actually done a lot of work to do that, but we haven't had the opportunity to prove that yet! So, through this book Evans would want all of us to understand that at the same time men were making profound differences to this world, women were doing the same thing, but in a more hidden way, and actually much more effective in other ways!…
This year we have touched on the self and then focused on how technology could jeopardise our existence. Times are changing and so are we; Technology will keep changing us like it has always done throughout history, change does not necessarily mean take over, technology will advance as an extension of us to help us improve not to allow us to reach perfection.…
In “The Difference Between Us” the program begins by discussing how for several hundreds of years, we’ve classified people into separate “races” by external differences; e.g. eye shape, hair texture, the color of skin, etc., not because we found biological reasons but purely because we look different so therefore we must be genetically different. Science has measured, poked and prodded man in the search for anything that will, conclusively, prove we are different, but nothing has been found. Because the modern human race has only been around for about 100,000 years, not long enough to develop the genetic differences necessary to create different subspecies, and some experts believe that all of the human race can trace their beginnings back…

America is one of the highest living standard countries in the world, with possibilities of great opportunities. Many immigrants come to this country for the chance at a better life, and to follow the lifestyles and aspects of being an American. Americans can be defined by three key aspects. Striving for what we want to do in life is the first and maybe the most critical, keeping the faith and goals for America that our founding fathers had, and lastly, keeping the pride of being an American when it is tested. These three aspects are what defines immigrants and U.S. born citizens as Americans, and it creates the ground for them to stand on when making the claim that they are American.…
