Writing Reflection #4 In Katherine Newman’s The Job Ghetto, she speaks on the reality many Americans face when seeking employment in this country. One of the most obvious Conservative talking points is to “pick yourself up by your bootstraps” and try to find yourself a job and that the market is not stagnant or difficult right now for those with only high school diplomas. One of the things that I appreciate that Newman shows in her article is that the fast-food industry has been growing over the last few years, from McDonald’s to Burger King to many others, and has shown very little to the more than 2.3 million people that work under their company.…
To begin with, the media portrays false images of how poor the lower class is, how lazy they are as a result of their own life choices. We see similar portrays of false images in Bell Hooks essay “Seeing And Making Culture: Representing The Poor” . For instance, Bell Hooks describes how the lower class is portrayed incorrectly through social media based on personal experience when she states the comments of her peers and professors, “they almost always portrayed the poor as shiftless, mindless, lazy, dishonest, and unworthy” (Hooks 484). This quote is a prime example of how the lower class are expected not strive and work as hard as other people and are seen as not good enough.…
Blinder begins his argument by describing how the labor market has changed over the past few decades. Today, a college degree is something that is considered necessary for getting a good and well-paying job. In contrast, thirty years ago, many jobs were filled with high school graduates or even high school dropouts. Blinder states that this shift is thought to be a main cause of income inequality, which means that now, the lower skilled and uneducated workers face a big disadvantage (441). During the 1990s, a few steps were taken to fix this problem, like raising the minimum wage. In this decade, there has been a push to send more kids to college and further educate them. As we look forward to the future, however, the issue is not with education…
People view things differently than others, for example, some people may experience something and think that it is petrifying but others may just walk past it. Using the letter “The Smell of Fresh Paint” and the short story “International Reality Consultants, LTD” as evidence of two people explaining a point of view of what they saw. In these two texts they both react differently to different types of situations.…
There are so many single parents who are going back to school to further there education to receive a satisfying career. Since, I am a single mother without education I am passed up for jobs with the lacking of education. Most single parents already have a hard time getting a job. Then without an education you don’t have an argument to even stand on. As you go back to school you start to open up more opportunity for yourself. People will argue with you even though you have an education you could still get a job like McDonald, Target and Wal-Mart. When you think about being a college graduate receiving a job such as Wal-Mart we don’t realize you are able to climb the latter at a fast pastes since having an education. I remember a friend of mine worked at Wal-Mart as a cashier, he was only there for a month or so and they where looking for a manger position. Now, they had this woman who been working at Wal-Mart for 20 plus years. See, this woman knew how to work all areas in the job from top to bottom, but just because she didn’t have a college degree they gave the job to Rychard just because he had a degree in business management. The woman was upset she was passed up for the job since she had more experience then he did. Just…
The article “women at work” is written by Amber Darr who is a great writer and barrister. She writes regularly in the newspaper regarding the prevailing social issues and their legal awareness in the society. This masterpiece “women at work” expresses her reservation about the condition of women at the workplace. Her credibility, capability and strength over law issues allow her to supervise advocacy training programs and enforce skills to the practicing barristers. Her audience for this particular critique is much broader, however, she primarily focus on the Pakistan community particularly the government sector, media and courts.…
People are trying to get a job but with their background it is hard to do, when you have a background that will cause you to suffer when it comes to getting a good job. Employers are turning them down because of their background not their skills. There are ways to get a good job but it takes time an effort to do so.…
The working class or “blue collar class” of society have jobs, not careers, as factory workers or clerical workers, or in hospitality and tourism. The working class comprises 27% of the class structure. The children of the working class attend a community college for two years but are not likely to graduate. The working poor’s annual income does not exceed $25,000, they have unstable work without benefits, and include the highest percentage of people of color. The…
It is a time where the accomplishment of a high school diploma is not enough to have a well-paid career. The struggle is hard enough to finish high school for students whose family is in need of some financial stability. The decision of getting a job or to continue on education after high school is a tough choice. Even though a student may want to help out the family with an extra income, he or she will realize it is not so easy anymore. Every day it gets harder to get a job not because of the economy, but it is the requirements the employer wants the employee to have, one of which is a college degree. The pressure of family responsibilities make the student stressed, and so they are stuck between keeping the…
Labor markets if they had the proper education they would start in lower positions than…
In the first section of the Blinder article, he starts off talking about much education one should accomplish. Blinder states, “In a progressive society, such as worrisome social phenomenon might elicit some strong policy responses, such as more compensatory education, stepped-up efforts at retraining, reinforcement of the social safety net” (Blinder 9). Americans are shredding the safety net; they keep on taking away reinforcements that help keep the playing field “fair.” According to Blinder, an effect of this is Social Darwinism, where the work force has become survival of the fittest. Employers are looking for people with a high level of education and good people skills. Having good people means being able to communicate well with others; it is a soft skill you must acquire. Later on in the article, Blinder talks about offshoring. In the article he explains that offshoring is, “the movement of jobs overseas” (Blinder 9). Countries with lower wages are taking jobs from Americans. Blinder talks about three reasons why jobs are becoming offshored. The first reason is because of “simple arithmetic.” The second reason is because of the growth in technology; people are now able to do jobs across seas in…
I am not a poor inner city kid. I am a teenage white girl who comes from a middle class white background. So life is easier for me. But that doesn’t mean that the succession is impossible for those kids from the inner city. It doesn’t mean that there are no opportunities for them. I believe that everyone in this country has a chance to succeed. Even a poor inner city kid in Kansas City.…
Today, America is known as the land of opportunity. If this is true, then why are immigrants not able to get jobs as easily as people born in America? The truth is that people here in America don’t always have equal opportunity. If a Caucasian man and a Hispanic man both applied for the same job, chances are the Caucasian man would get the job. Just think, in Arizona today a police officer can racially profile a person without getting in trouble. It is actually allowed for police to stop a Hispanic person on suspicion that they are an illegal immigrant. If the Hispanic person doesn’t have his or her papers they can be questioned.…
It’s no always easy to find a job because some people are prejudiced against immigrants, it’s like they want to protect native culture from external influence, as we say « birds of a feather flock together » people of the same culture stand together, so even if you find a job, despite your good resume, your future is uncertain and you can be laid off. It’s almost the same when you…
Both agencies I researched focus on helping the unemployed or low income populations. The problems affecting the unemployed are simple; they mainly have to do with the downfall of the economy over the last few years, causing a lack of job availability. With places going out of business and inflation, companies either don’t need or cant afford to pay more employees and are running their businesses on as slim a staff as possible. While this seems to be the biggest problem of unemployment, it is definitely not the only one. Others include lack of education or experience, child care and even unemployment compensation itself. Many people don’t have the income, time or opportunity to gives themselves the proper education or training for a job that may be considered a career, therefore they get stuck in a low paying job. Often times employers are looking for someone who has a four year college degree and may not even consider the person who doesn’t, even though they may be perfectly capable of learning how to do the job. It seems that a decade ago employers were willing to hire a new, inexperienced, employee and give them the training that they need to fulfill the job requirements. Now, employers are using a new strategy called “talent staffing.” In this technique employers opt for the candidate who is already educated and experienced in the field in which they are hiring. Others cant afford to put their children in day care while they go to work, as it is so expensive and often defeats the purpose of them working. In our world today, when one becomes unemployed they are often compensated by the government for a period of time, which most recently has been rather lengthy and somewhat generously. By offering this type of compensation to the unemployed, it is making searching for work less of a priority and it being more comfortable to continue to stay home and not look for…
