I. Background Anastasia Steele is a 22-year old English major graduate of Washington State University in Vancouver. At the start of the novel, Ana is portrayed as a bookworm and is very studious. She is described as a pale, brown-haired young woman with blue eyes. Despite how beautiful she is for the eyes of others, Ana is highly insecure of her appearance especially for being slim, pale, and scruffy. Ana is clumsy and doesn’t really feel comfortable in her own skin. Despite this, she developed a romantic relationship with a 27 year-old billionaire, Christian Grey. Christian sees something in Ana that compels him to proposition her to become his submissive in a (Bondage Discipline Sadism and Masochism) BDSM type relationship. II. Theory Approach To further analyze the personality of Ana, we consider the divisions of personality as proposed by Sigmund Freud. According to Freud, there are three parts of personality, which develops and interact with one another: the id, ego and superego. The id is considered the pleasure principle. Ana is highly influenced by her id since despite of how much she knows about the consequences of being a submissive, she still desired to have the said sexual relationship with Christian.
