Case Interview Coach Ruhanen
In conclusion the interview coach Ruhanen we learned that intercollegiate athletic departments are more than what they appear to be on television. They are composed of many departments that aspire to contribute to the successful image of the team on an off the field. That it takes an entire department to raise a champion. Looking at specifically at the Athletic Performance for the Olympic sports division of our strength and conditioning program here at the University of Memphis we have learned that although a smaller departmental unit of the athletic department they play a crucial role in reaching helping teams reach their goals of a championship. Interviewing coach Ruhanen brought into light aspects of the department that most people may have not known. To include the staffing that makes up the athletic performance for Olympic sports staff, a different aspect for staffing diversity in the department. …show more content…
Some recommendations that Alan and I would have suggested to coach Ruhanen and his department included the idea of collaborating with his superior if permissible for the exchange of ideas (i.e., football strength staff). Alan and I understood that the Director of Athletic Performance coach Josh Storms is still new the University of Memphis Athletic and that may be an idea that would help mend the distinct departments. Another concept that Alan and I would suggest is that even though his department is smaller than what he is accustomed to that he should still continue with performance appraisals. Chelladurai (2014), states that performance appraisals are use two primary functions which are developmental purpose and evaluative purpose (Chelladurai, 2014, pp. 361). These performance appraisals will not only help his colleague grow, but as well as his student athletes if chooses to do it with

The person that I interviewed was Dawn Reynolds, the Senior Associate Athletic Director for Business and Finance here at the University of Miami. After initially getting in contact with Ms. Reynolds a few weeks ago, I was finally able to meet with her briefly and conduct my interview on November 30, 2010, in room 261 in the Hecht Athletics Center. Just to give a bit of background information about Ms. Reynolds, she is from Elmira, New York and now currently resides in Coral Gables, Florida. She graduated from the University of Miami with a major in Finance and started her career at Liberty University in Lynchburg, Virginia where she worked for four years as their budget coordinator. As a past president of the College Athletics Business Managers Association, she was named the College Athletic Business Manager of the Year in 2003 and has since served on various committees including the ACC Finance Committee and chairs the NCAA Minority Opportunities and Interests Committee.
