1. In a utilitarian and caring perspective UNOCAL was right in deciding to invest in the pipeline because with this project they employed an astounding 7,551 Burmese citizens and continued with 587 more; these pipelines were carrying an enormous 500-600 million cubic feet of gas per day towards Thailand, this being done caused the economy to expand rapidly and it increased revenues. In the right and justice perspective UNOCAL was erroneous because they forced the pupils to relocate, and do labor also they tortured, murdered, and raped them; all these factors which violated the human rights. The UNOCAL were justified in deciding to invest in the pipeline because the people of the economy have benefited tremendously because of the implementation of the pipeline.
2. Yes UNOCAL is morally responsible for the injuries inflicted on the Karen people because there was no need for them to have force the citizens to relocate these people from their homes, and forced them into doing their labor. Also as was mentioned, it’s completely inhumane and morally ill to for them to torture, murder and rape the innocent citizens on the Yadana Pipeline Project. This was a violation towards the legal and moral rights.
3. Yes I agree with UNOCAL’s view of engagement rather than isolation because by doing this the company expands and the revenue increases, but while that was happening the goal for social and political change in the country was seemed forgotten because even though they insinuated that they were doing good for the people and country they were not. They were destroying the rights of the people and leaving sort of a bad mark on the country.
