Rwandan genocide, which highlighted the lack of power that the UN holds, in being able to intervene in humanitarian issues. The UN has assisted in promoting democratic governance around the world, aiming to eliminate conflicts within states before it can intensify, making way for greater participation and protection of people’s interests.
Arguably, the UN has fought continuously for the voting right of people in areas where the ideology of dictatorship or monarchy is still dominating. The UN helped in Cambodia (1993) to rebuild a country shattered by a brutal dictatorship and a dozen years of civil war. The UN force withdrew after organising free elections that put a coalition government in place, thus installing an interim administration in which the government was held accountable to its citizens and worked within its framework to protect the rights of citizens. This shows the work of the UN in the war against dictatorship and totalitarianism, suggesting its effectiveness in its function to maintain peace and security by suppressing conflicts in order to prevent them intensifying which could in turn lead to conflict on the world stage.
