Case Study 7.1 Patrick Anderson Grand Canyon University: ADM 624 July 24, 2013

1. Aravind is successful because each organizational component directly addresses the organization’s mission. Discuss. Aravind is highly successful because each component adheres to core mission where spirituality and humanity supersedes capitalism and profits. Aravind Eye Care System founder, Dr. Gouindappa Venkataswamy, warmly known as Dr. V, decided that in the developing country of India the government alone could not encounter the health needs of the population of the country. In a country where 12 million individuals are blind, the vast majority suffered from cataracts which tend to assault people before the age of 60- compared to individuals in the Western Hemisphere. As the Indian saying proceeds “a blind person is like a mouth with no hands.” Dr. V was guided by the teachings of the Indian nationalist Sri Aurobindo (Aravind is a derivative of Aurobindo), who became one of the country revered spiritual leaders. This spiritual leader located man’s search for his divine nature, not turning away from the world but, rather engaging the world; introducing his visions on human progress, and spiritual evolution. . Dr. V incorporates his spiritual existence to his daily labor appropriately. As a young male, he converted into a scholar of Sri Aurobindo, and Aravind was established on this principle of service and continues to be piloted by this philosophy. Venkataswamy(2013) notes that “Intelligence and capability are not enough. There must also be the joy of doing something beautiful. Being of service to God and humanity means going well beyond the sophistication of the best technology, to the humble demonstration of courtesy and compassion to each patient” (para. 3). The Aravind Eye Care Center is also successful because of its ability to incorporate McDonald’s corporation as their operational

    1. Edmunds developed the Inside Line iPhone app because we are in a huge technological era. Edmunds needed to find a way to get the most customers possible because he is in a competitive market. A lot of people use tablets or smartphones now, by developing a mobile app it increases the chance that more people will take the time to go look at Edmunds app. Companies that provide free services, such as Edmunds app, earn money to support the development and support costs by donations or sponsorships. Another big way a free app can earn money is by adding banner ads to their mobile app. So Edmunds would be collecting a percentage from the companies that pay to put the ads on the Inside Line iPhone app.…

Vision: “To design and implement a quality, community-based primary care system with an emphasis on intervention and prevention. A system which is caring, compassionate and competent focusing on the needs of our culturally diverse community as well as ways to continually improve and expand our service. The mission is used every minute and every day at my site. They have a routine when checking patients in, getting them ready when it’s their time to see the doctors etc. The doctor’s deal with patient and their needs different hit the “sensitive manner”. This hospital is made for the community to use in case of emergency. They have a rule they have to go by, like people can’t be waiting for so long, everyone has to helped and treated with respect there has been times when patients felt like they were being treated wrong. Human resources were called and came down to investigate the situation. Everyone seems to leave happy, and all questions have been answers. Since the hospital has gotten less money, the eye clinic can’t provide glasses. So they have made relationship with another place that makes glasses and will help the patient receive them for a low price. All the patient has to do is provide a prescription which the doctor has giving to them. My short term goal is to learn why some people can’t see out if there peripheral.…

About 40 million people in the world are blind and India is home to 1/3 of the world’s blind population. Yet, for many of these cases, it is preventable and treatable. In developing countries, the leading cause of blindness is attributed to cataracts, in which the natural lens of the eye clouds over time. This requires surgical removal and replacement with an artificial one. In 2006 alone, India had nearly 7 million cataract-blind individuals, with roughly 3.8 million new cases occuring every year. However, with 25% of Indians considered below the poverty line and with much larger numbers at income levels that would place such treatments for blindness out of their reach.…

    1. Factor Conditions: Labor and capital conditions contributed immensely to the success of Aravind. In terms of labor, Dr. V inspired his family members to take part in his vision, therefore creating a pipeline of committed and intellectual business partners. According to the case, as Aravind expanded from a small 20 bed hospital to a 600 bed hospital, his brother, sister, and nephew took on administrative roles in the hospital among the multiple family doctors who eventually joined the venture. The familial involvement led to many cost saving initiatives in Aravind’s capital investments. His brother, G. Srinivasan, a civil engineer contractor, constructed all hospital buildings at cost, freeing up capital to invest in other parts of the business. In addition, Dr. V provided continuous training and support to its personnel which likely contributed to their retention and attraction of eye doctors at the hospital.…

Aravind Case Study Introduction In a country plagued by curable and needless blindness, 58 year-old surgeon Dr. Govindappa Venkataswamy recognized upon retirement that his 100,000 sight-restoring surgeries were not enough of an impact to fight blindness in India and cure the 12 million people affected by it. With a big dream, but no money, no business plan, and no safety net, he embarked on a journey to start an organization with a single purpose in mind: to give sight for all. Starting with a small 11-bed clinic, he went on to create the Aravind Eye Care System, today’s largest and most productive blindness-prevention organization on the planet, which sees more than 2.5 million patients a year. With the success that Aravind has had, it is undeniable that they are doing something right, and for that reason it is important to analyze them to determine what has made them such a high performance social enterprise. This analysis will provide a detailed explanation of the determining factors behind their success; especially the motivation behind Aravind, and the innovation at the core of the enterprise. The analysis will also provide a brief opinion on how their novel approach can be used to deal with problems in US healthcare. Motivation by Social Impact and Spirituality The motivation behind Dr.V’s creation of Aravind was never about profits, selfishness, or any sort of personal accolade or recognition. The main motivator was to restore people’s vision, and improve the way they live their lives coupled with “bringing higher consciousness to transform mind and body and souls of people,” including his own. Sri Aurbindo’s beliefs that “ perfection is the consciousness that surpasses any form which we can give it” is what shaped Dr.V’s own beliefs. Perfection is a concept that is ambiguous for most of us, but for Dr. V it now had a meaning. Being perfect was based on self-development, consciousness, pushing your limits, understanding your own limitations,…

Strangely, the solution can be sought through one of the most noted business model from India, with one the lowest life expectancy rates. Aravind Eye Hospital inspired by the business model of McDonalds has been able to achieve high rate of efficiency in health services. An average Aravind surgeon performs 2000 surgeries per year against the global average of 500. An average eye operation in the western hospital takes 30 minutes but in Aravind it takes only 10. This remarkable efficiency is achieved by differentiating services into smaller work units and then, integrating these work units with high precision and efficiency.…

Good Morning to all of you! It is a great pleasure and privilege to participate in this momentous function organized by the Lion’s Club of Central Madras under the auspices of His Excellency the Governor of Tamil Nadu at the historic Durbar hall. At the outset I would like to express my profound gratitude to his Excellency the Governor of Tamil Nadu on behalf of Sankara Nethralaya and the Lion’s Club of Central Madras for giving his valuable time in the midst of his busy official schedules to inaugurate the diabetic retinopathy screening camp today and for kindly consenting to make his August presence in today’s Award Presentation Function. Their holy crusade against blindness which dates back to year 1925 when they accepted the great Helen Keller’s challenge and became ‘Knights of the blind in the Crusade against darkness’ and ‘Sight First’ the far reaching global eye care initiative by them are golden pages in the history of their fight against blindness. I am proud to say here that the ‘Lion’s Club of Central Madras’ have added their own glorious chapter to this history through the unstinting support and tireless efforts of their members in eliminating blindness.
