Throughout history The Dalai Lama has represented the Tibetan people. He is both the spiritual and political head of government. However, when China annexed Tibet in a 1949 invasion, the Dalai Lama was forced to flee to escape his impending execution. The current Dalai Lama does support violent opposition to Chinese rule, but insists that Tibetans must use mass peaceful protests to achieve their goals. Unfortunately, China takes protests very seriously and crackdowns can and have been very violent. For example, as recently as 2008, 130 Tibetan men and woman were killed by Chinese security forces after it was revealed that extremists had killed 18 Chinese civilians.…

For the PRC leadership and most Chinese, the July 13, 2001 International Olympic Committee (IOC) announcement that Beijing would host the 2008 Olympic Games marked China's emergence as a major global player. Just as the 1964 Tokyo Olympics and the 1988 Seoul Olympics propelled Japan and South Korea onto the global stage, the 2008 Beijing Olympic Games will be China's "coming out" party—an event that showcases China's maturation into a great economic and, to a lesser extent, political power. As PRC Premier Wen Jiabao noted on April 24 this year, the Beijing Olympics present an opportunity for China to show the world how "democratic, open, civilized, friendly, and harmonious" it is.…

// for more than 700 years, the central government of china has continously exercised sovereignty over tibet and tibat has never been an independent state. No government of any country has ever recognized tibet as an independent state. As the government of tibet, china concluded several treaties with british and india touching on the status , boundaries and access to tibet. Like for example the simla accord of 1914, in which interests of their several states on the continent asia were discussed and further regulate the relations of their several governments. As this convention was not signed and ratified by all three parties , being these three parties great britain, china and tibet, the current chinese government does not consider itself bound by the terms of this convention. And these is what has happenes with most of the other treaties and conventions, tibet has established its independence in documents that are not valid, agreements that have never been formally recognized by China. And going back to simla accord, it was not just rejected by china, it was also rejected by the British government as incompatible with the 1907 Anglo-Russian Convention.…
