My duties at this position were to handle all health related issues that the employees of the company were facing. While working at this level, I realized the state of Sikkim in the Public Health sector was more terrible than I had initially seen. Most of the employees were either depressed or at the skirt of it. I then found reports from National Criminal Records Bureau which stated Sikkim had the highest number of depression and suicides in the country. Sikkim also ranks third highest for drug abuse. This was even more shocking as it is the lowest populated state in the country. The average per capita income is also 3-4 times higher than the national average for India. Also, the social norms are not as stringent as compared to the rest of India. All this information baffled me. This was when the gravity of a Masters in Public Health settled on me.
