The article “’Bros Before Hos’: The Guy Code” by Michael Kimmel, chronicles the negative perception that men have for the “weaker” man through a list of unwritten rules of men. It stated that this “guy code,” was or is, essentially, what defined masculinity. Many descriptions of weakness include homophobic words like “faggot” and “gay.” Words that pertain more to women, like “pussy” or “mama’s boy,” are also used as an insult to describe a man’s weakness. This is because of the low status that men had been taught throughout the years. Masculinity, Kimmel says, is attributed through peers, male figures in their lives, and a “hard-wired” definition of what being man means. Once a man steps outside of those lines, the risk is looking being emasculated.…

I want to work with one patient or work with a group counseling sessions depending on the treatment needed. My goal is to help patients pinpoint their situations and behaviors that block the road to relapse and lead them to recovery. Without a master’s degree in human services, I feel like I could not benefit being a drug and alcohol counselor because I would keep empty. By getting a master’s degree, I will have more knowledge on efficiently and effectively integrate insights to help these patients. In order to become fully aware of the biology associated with social work, there are a number of things I need to learn more about. First, I would need to become familiar with the DSM-V, which is the most common source used to diagnose mental health conditions. My mother has a copy of the previous version and it would be great to educate myself on even more conditions than we discussed in this class prior to entering the workforce. Also, I feel it would be important to dive deeper into the study of various diseases and how they impact human behavior, perhaps through a public health course here at RIC. Although I knew it would be very valuable for me to learn about these topics, it became even more evident after doing the case studies together.…

The mental health field is very broad. There are a hundred lifetimes of knowledge one could study, and no one person can know it all. One challenge I am having is deciding where to put my extra time and resources to deepen my understanding of the field. I am actively talking with other mental health providers in order to inform my decisions as I strive to develop my own approach to mental health.…
1. My main objective in terms of my career path is to work with diverse communities, specifically I would like to become a caseworker and work with immigrant and refugee communities to help them gain access to services and feel at home in their community. I think it is important that in every branch of social work there are individuals who are compassionate towards diverse populations and experience working with individuals whose first language is not English. Because of this, I am interested in pursuing a graduate degree in Clinical Social Work. My undergraduate majors are English Literature and Spanish, which at first do not seem like areas of focus which would naturally lead me into a career in social work, but honestly…
I moved to California three years ago to pursue a Master's degree in social work at USC. During the time I have lived here, I have gained invaluable experience working full-time in the social work field. My first social work related job in California was working at an IMD step-down program for transitional aged youths and adults with dual diagnoses. From there, I began working in the Wraparound program at Aviva Family and Children's Services as a Child and Family Specialist. I have thoroughly enjoyed my time working with these agencies but am also very excited to begin graduate study at USC's School of Social Work since my graduate education was the reason for my move to southern California.…
The United States of America is branded as the land of opportunities and a place where anyone can come and make a better life for themselves. Which is why many people choose to immigrate to the U.S. the Center for American Progress reports that “The foreign-born population consisted of 40.7 million people in 2012. Broken down by immigration status, the foreign-born population was composed of 18.6 million naturalized U.S. citizens and 22.1 million noncitizens in 2012. Of the noncitizens, approximately 13.3 million were legal permanent residents, 11.3 million were unauthorized migrants, and 1.9 million were on temporary visas”(2014). There are some people who think that immigrants are bad for this country because they supposedly come and take American peoples jobs and they get help from the government costing tax payers a lot of money. There are people now like the presidential candidate Donald Trump who believe that Immigrants from Mexico are “Bringing drugs, they're bringing crime, they're rapists” (Trump, 2015). Trump is proposing building a real border to keep illegal immigrants out.…
How does this focus in social work interested you? Micro social work is significant for the reasons that I want to work in the mental health field of social work. Although it would not matter which population I work with later in life, my focus as of now it to work with the military population and the Micro-practice may include military social work, where I might help…
My first and highest interest is homelessness and housing. I find myself passionate about wanting to give homeless or underprivileged individuals and/or families a fresh start. Nothing beats connecting individuals to the right resources, watching them take control back over their lives, and striving to reach their fullest potential. A newer area of interest I have is international social work. I keep finding myself drawn to global poverty and the affects poverty has on the individuals and/or families such as little to no schooling, poor health, high disease rates, starvation, and war. Ultimately, I am interested in helping restore dignity within these individuals and communities by advocacy and through breaking down development barriers.…
With globalization and the availability of countless opportunities in our society, nothing truly makes one person completely unique from a group of people that share the same interest. But when the reason or motivation behind that interest is analyzed, a person becomes defined in an essential way. Ever since I was a little girl, I wanted to be a doctor. My passion for becoming a health care professional, who serves for the betterment of people in our society, has influenced my whole life. My interest in healthcare was sparked by the experiences I had with my uncle. My uncle was a cardiologist back home in India and I used to go to his workplace, almost every single day of my summer vacation as a child. Most of the technical terms used in my…
