I never really had an answer when grown-ups asked me what I wanted to be when I was little. Did I want to be a Veterinarian? Maybe, animals are awesome. Teacher? I’d rather just learn. Astronaut? Only if they make space food tastier. Now I’m about to be one of many so-called “grown-ups” and I finally have the answer. I want to help people. I will help people. I am going to be a social worker.…
I wanted to bring to your attention some issues that I had about a professor in the school of social work, J. Breezer Rickey. I had her for SOWK 370 this fall. As a social worker, I feel that her sense of empathy for her students is not present in her daily interactions with students. She has made several rude comments to me (which I have attached as a PDF to this email), and those comments have made my self-esteem go down a considerable amount. A social worker should life people up, not bring them down, as is the situation here.…
In my exploration of different populations in the social work field, I interned at San Andreas Regional Center (SARC) in order to learn more about the population diagnosed with developmental disabilities. I received insight into the dynamics of caring for people with autism, down syndrome, cerebral palsy, and other conditions of the like and learned about the various ways such a population is disenfranchised and taken advantage of outside organizations that cater specifically to them.…
Unless otherwise cited, the career information presented in this paper was obtained from O8Net on-line (National Center for O*Net Development, 20??). Through the O*Net assessments I received a 28 in the category of social. The social category was the highest number compared to the next high of 14 in investigative. After looking through careers in the social category I felt the need to further research mental health and substance abuse social workers. I currently work in the field of mental health and substance abuse as a crisis counselor. I had seriously thought about going back to school to get my masters in social work after talking to making social work co-workers. However there were many aspects of the job that I disliked, but I wanted…
I want to be a part of something that truly makes a different in a person’s everyday life. I’ve always had a passion for the well-being of others. I want to be a source of strength to those who may be recovering from a surgery and just want to get back to living life, or to children, like my son, who just need a little extra help so they can enjoy and flourish in their childhood and in…
My minor in college will be communications and broadcasting. I will use this knowledge to help youths in my neighborhood where drugs and crime rate are high; to get them involved in programs for teens that will teach them to focus on God, school, and activities. I will spend countless hours getting them to study their lessons to obtain the highest grades possible. With the encouragement of the staff at different programs, I see this happening.…
Working in the Human Services field for me professionally is taking all the things I am interested in…
I was given the opportunity to learn basic research methodology through my undergraduate Social Work degree. A graduate program would allow me to build upon this knowledge in order to not only perform research projects but also to evaluate the work of others.…
The Boy Who Was Raised as a Dog by Dr. Bruce D. Perry is an insightful memoir about a physiatrist’s experiences while working with children who are ridden with psychological disorders due to long term and sever trauma. Each child disused in the reading is unique in their experiences and the consequences of long term neglect and abuse that the children were subjected to at an early age. Throughout the course of the book, the author unravels these traumatic experiences and relates to how they have influence on the child’s current mental state. Dr. Perry uses unconventional and insightful techniques to work with these children, and help them to adapt to social enviornments, florish in an educational setting and allow them to live normal and healthy lives. Dr. Perry thinks outside of the box when working with his clients, and no two treatments are alike.…
I attended a session of the Child Abuse Conference on Thursday morning at 8:45 called “JAYC Foundation: Managing the Stress of Traumatic Cases.” The presenters included Dr. Rebecca Bailey, Cynthia Psaila, and Jaycee Dugard herself. This seminar was all about knowing what you yourself can handle when working a case. It was geared more towards those viewing in the social work field, since both of the speakers were in the social work business themselves. A little bit of background on Dr. Rebecca Bailey – she was the woman who took on Jaycee Dugard after her 18-year kidnapping. Cynthia only recently (within the last 5 years) came into Rebecca Bailey’s practice and became part of her social work team.…
Social work is a practice-based profession as well as an academic discipline that advocates social change, development, and the empowerment and liberation of society for individuals and communities in need. Social justice and equity would be an area of interest since I have worked closely with the Institute for Dismantling Racism, and Hispanic League, both located in Winston-Salem, NC. These organizations fight structural and cultural barriers through various activities (i.e. community events, caucuses, etc.) to promote community inclusiveness and cultural understanding. My experience with these organizations gives me first-hand experience with common social justice and equity issues that may occur throughout North Carolina. Fighting for social justice and equity is a passion of mine that I have enjoyed pursuing in my academic career. My passion for this topic and people, as well as, my experience greatly increases my interest for this focus…
As of right now, my professional goals are undecided. All I know is that I want to work with young children. There are so many different opportunities of work that I could be successful in, but for right now id just wish to explore all of my options. I don’t want to rush into my future without knowing what I will like and what I will dislike. As a goal I just was to be successful and happy, whether that would be me as a social worker or maybe even an early childhood art teacher.…
- The following report is selected to discover and explain the motivational theory know as Theory Z. Theory Z is a motivation theory which was discovered and created by Dr. William Ouchi and is known as the so-called ‘Japanese Management’ style. Dr. William Ouchi’s theory Z was based on Dr. W. Edwards Deming 's famous "14 points". Deming was an American scholar whose management and motivation theories were rejected in the United States, he then went on to help lay the foundation of Japanese organizational development during their expansion in the world economy in the 1980s, from there on this is where Dr William Ouchi created the motivational theory ‘Theory Z’…
