Case Study: If I Were Santa
 If I were Santa, I would think the reason why the Elves had neither the experience for, nor the interest in work like that is because they had never expressed interest in that type of work. I, Santa, had always taken care of all the big picture and operational work in the past from when the company had first started until now. There was a culture established long ago that I handled the operations and the procedures. If there was a better way of doing things then I would let the Elves know and it would then get done. The Elves never spoke up or expressed that they were unhappy with the current way of operating, so it was perceived that the Elves were just here to do their job as they were told for the day and nothing more. I would be sure to setup a professional relationship and trust with Santa early on. I would ask questions and show a willingness to do extra work whenever an opportunity presented itself. I would make it clear to Santa that I consider him to be a leader and a great mentor for me. I would also clearly communicate with my desired to learn and grow with the business at each review opportunity. I would be sure to be respectful and kindly share my thoughts and ideas without overstepping. This may require me to keep my thoughts to myself until an appropriate time presented itself for sharing information. I think it is also important to note that I would be sure to think about each new idea or criticism before I shared it. Thinking, “Would this positively improve the work load for everyone or does this only affect me personally.” By asking myself this question first, it keep the workshop needs as my primary focus. For a business to grows, it requires a team mentality. To have an effective team the members need to communicate effectively, contribute, and collaborate with each other. This type of work environment and harmony between team members can only be achieved with an effective leader. By asking your team members for feedback on your leadership and listening to the results of that feedback, it will show the employees that you value input and listening.     This event encouraged members to step outside of their comfort zone and perceive leadership in a new light. The workshop followed the Bible verse 1 Corinthians 12:14 which states “For the body does not consist of one member but of many.” During this workshop, that was led by Co-Meeting Director, Alex Sommer, each group of four was challenged to build the largest tower, which was to be made of tape, paperclips, and newspaper. However, there were some very interesting restrictions placed on each member of the group of four. The first member had to be blind folded and distribute the tape, the second member had to be listening to music, and had to place the newspaper. The third member, could not talk and had to use the paperclips. The fourth and final member of the group could not use their arms. In the 10 minutes allowed, the groups were challenged to build the tallest freestanding tower with these restrictions. This led many of the members out of their comfort zone and allowed for growth as a leader and as a team member. The point of the workshop was to maximize the potential of a team, each member must be in a position for them to best succeed. As a leader, truly understanding each individual member’s talents and abilities will allow a leader to properly form a role for them. Also, instead of focusing on what the individual and the leader’s team lack, it should give the opportunity to focus on what each member excels at. It also allows individuals to embrace those who are different from yourself. Without different talents and abilities, the team will not be as successful.     The success can be attributed to several factors. One of the most important factors leading to successful meetings is setting clear goals and an agenda before the actual meeting. Being that all group members have demanding jobs and families to attend to, we have been able to avoid wasting time meeting for things that can be done via email or over the group discussion forum.
