PRINCIPLES OF MANAGEMENT UNIT 3 CASE STUDY JANINE EASTEP COLUMBIA SOUTHERN UNIVERSITY

It has come to my attention as CEO of Donaldson’s clothing store that sales have been steadily declining in the last quarter. There is a growing list of competitors in the area who are offering lower prices dramatically increasing competition. In addition many of these stores are offering an extensive line of men’s and children’s clothing as well. In order to increase sales I have created an analysis of the situation and will be implementing a new sales plan effective next week. Although the sales team at our St. Paul location has known about the issue facing their store and have made great efforts in improving customer service and offering discounts, sales are still plummeting I have identified a list of options. After identifying our three main competitors it is clear they have been using a low price strategy that has offset sales at Donaldson’s. A feasible choice is to offer lower prices. We have developed a client base and repeated customers in the past by offering great service at an affordable price. We cannot afford to offset service at this point in return for lower prices. Our competitors clothing line is not in comparison with our line in quality, and price will not affect sales where quality is a preference. Therefore, I do not believe that lower prices will earn us an advantage. However, to offer savings we will be mailing special promotions to customers. For the sales team there will be incentives for promoting our new sales strategy of suggestion selling. Another obvious advantage our competitors have is the offering of a family clothing line.     The industry we have chosen is the department store-retail industry. Within this industry, we have chosen the department stores of JCPenney and Macy’s. We find this industry, as well as these two companies, interesting from a strategic perspective. JCPenney has recently undergone a massive strategic restructuring in regards to its pricing, brand offerings, and store layout, pushing it away from the typical department store strategy of discounts and coupons. Its new strategy has become much closer to Wal-Mart’s strategy of every day low prices. Macy’s, on the other hand, has restructured with a push from the economic environment to offer higher-end, localized products that you cannot find anywhere else. Our team has come to realize through internal and external analyses that Macy’s has come up the stronger of the two models. They have created competitive advantage through strong relationships with suppliers, differentiating their new product lines, and localizing for consumer needs. Though every day low cost is a great idea and could be catchy with consumers, JCPenney has failed to convey their new objective correctly. They lost touch with the end consumer and will have to catch up in that sense to gain back some ground.     According to Martis-Olivo, a retail analyst for Thomson Reuters, JCPennt’s sale performance is poor compared to Macy’s in 2011. Although Macy’s offers less discount and promotion, it posted a much stronger same-store sales average. Consumers now think department stores usually offering items at high prices, then offering discounts or coupons, so use such discount or coupon promotion to attract sales is not as much efficient as before. Furthermore, internet sales are jump up significantly in recent years due to the lower price and more convenience. So JCPenny’s new marketing strategy is launched in time to tackle these challenges. Being able to establish the “right” price is vital in the delicate process of generating revenues to sustain business operations. In order to be successful a retailer must utilize an effective retail pricing strategy. The retailer must account for the costs associated with the products. Two key elements in factoring product cost is the cost of goods and the amount of operating expenses.
