Case Study Of J. M Smucker Company
Many people know the J.M Smucker Company for its various store bought products for human consumers such as peanut butter, jams, and spreads, but they are also in charge of processing and packaging multiple animal food brands. Some of their dog food brands include Gravy Train, Kibbles N’ Bits, Skippy, and Ol’ Roy. The company’s net sales in 2016 were approximately $1,816 million compared to the $1,749 net sales in 2017. This means that the company’s revenue decreased nearly 4% or by $67 million in one year (“Corporate and Financial New Release,” 2017). Much of this decrease in income is due to recalls on some of their major brands, including pet foods for harmful reasons. According to consumer relations representative of J.M. Smucker Amanda, …show more content…
The recalls of J.M smucker pet food over the past two years is causing their yearly revenue to decrease and giving them a poor reputation, causing consumers to choose to purchase a different brand to ensure their pet’s well being. Additionally, if these types of problems continue to occur then they may have to discontinue many or potentially all of their pet food brands, causing their yearly profits to lower even further. To avoid downsizing of the large company, J.M. Smuckers will need to develop a solution to improve the quality of their processed animal …show more content…
Smuckers animal food brands and provides animals with a natural source of all of the vitamins and minerals they need to live a healthy and happy lifestyle, but there are a few concerns with it. One problem is that the preservatives in these animal foods help to expand the shelf life of the products (Amanda, personal communication, February 20, 2018). Removing the perservations would increase the likelihood of the products spoiling or developing bacterias. Another issue with this solution is possible microbes, germs, and parasites that cause E. Coli, salmonella, and trichinella found in raw meats (Dressler, 2011, p. 196). Contact with these viruses can make both animals and humans sick, and in severe cases cause death. The ideal solution to improve the nutritional value of store bought animal foods seems to be in the processing and packaging process rather in changing all of the ingredients

The medical supplies and equipment help providers deliver exceptional patient care. However, there have been issues with cost of equipment not specifically with McKesson but in general. Most Medicaid and Medicare insurance providers refuse to reimburse providers for procedures. Medical providers now have to find ways to use this equipment, provide needed service to patients, with minimum insurance reimbursement. Every human resource department is vital to each organization. The policies set forth help the ongoing operations and expansion of the organization.…

There is a long ongoing battle that is being waged between unions and business since the rise of large corporations. Unions were created to fight higher official corruption and to protect workers from unfavorable conditions and unfair treatment by top-level officials, companies take extreme measures to prevent the creation of unions within their organizations. There are positive and negative effects for both nonunion and unionized companies. Preventing workers from unionizing is a difficult task for organizations especially as they expand into the global arena. More is demanded from employees usually with little added benefits (thus the reason for unionization). A notable successful company is Trader Joe’s, who’s business strategy and cultural…

There are three main categories of dog food: dry, canned and treats. In 2011 the sales of dog food totaled somewhere in the arena of 14 billion dollars. Endeavoring to bring new dog food to an already established market can be a “daunting” task, especially when that particular dog food is frozen. Breeder’s Own Pet Foods as a whole has realized how diverse the dog food market is; however, brokers within this conglomerate believe that the true organic potential of this marketplace has yet to be “tapped” into effectively. With an ever-changing push toward becoming green (environmentally conscientious) and eating more organic foods than we have in the past; we must not exclude our furry friends when selecting health-conscientious nourishment for our household (s).…

Many meat packaging companies like yours, are there for processing meat from the animals such as pigs, cows, chicken, turkey, and so on. People may think that the meat that people buy from the market are safe, but what they don't know is the fact that sometimes even the meat on the floor are packaged with the clean meat. The fact is, regulations are needed for this problem, because without regulations many people will become sick. This is a great problem, thus it is my opinion that a solution is necessary. In my opinion a class should be started for all the worker at your factory, and they should be taught that meat that are on the floor should not be packaged with the good meet. The bad meat should first be cleaned before being re packaged, thus resulting in less problematic sickness from unclean meat. Once the meat is cleaned, there will be a significantly depletion of people dying from the food that they eat. You may think that this will be expensive to do, the fact is it won't really cost that much. In fact, all you have to do is find one of the many managers that you already have hired to do the teaching. Finally, it is important that you know that if you adopt this proposal, it will not only save many lives, but you will also be able to raise your met value thus increasing your income.…

Since 2002, Smucker’s business lineup evolved to include a variety of products including fruit-spreads, peanut butter, snacks, ice cream toppings, beverages and specialty items. Their strategy was to acquire successful brands with potential rather than to build new brands. These acquisitions proved successful as the company not only increased sales, but they were also able to execute their “center of the store” model. The industry is fairly attractive after suffering in the 90’s and early 2000’s with an increase in single parent homes, less females staying at home and household meals per year declining. However, with…

Over the years, it seems as if the agricultural industry has been more focused on the quantity, more than quality. As a society, we have been manipulated by companies into thinking we are eating all natural ingredients. Before companies started serving our foods with chemicals, authentic food came from animals that were free to roam on pastures and that were freshly cut and packaged. Now the food comes from a factory farm, which is when animals are treated as if they were machines designed only to produce. Factory farming has a negative impact on animals, human health and the environment. As consumers, we should be in control of what we want in our food; and to do so, we should cut down on how much we buy from the markets.…

As Americans, we are often blinded by the food industry to think that what we are putting into our bodies is to fuel our bodies, not to profit major companies. However, the whole idea of food production is to make food for the general public in the quickest, easiest way possible. When producing a mass product, things must be done efficiently and effectively, regardless of who or what it is affecting. Major businesses try to get the most bang for their buck, and it often has high stakes for those involved in the hard labor of the food industry.…

They are now trying to receive profit from the production itself. They are seeking for for ways to increase the profit obtained during the processing of the food and they have found a way. They have decided to add harmful substances to the production of the food such as antibiotics, additives, and large amount of salt. Although antibiotics help get rid of the viruses at the moment to secure more quantities of healthy food, it creates resistant infections that could be deadly due to the large amount of immunities that they have developed throughout the years of treatment. “The more a particular germ is exposed to antibiotics, the more rapidly it can develop resistance”(Sarah Halzack). Salt and additives are used to enhance the flavor of the food, but at the same time it causes people to be more sustainable to acquiring high-blood pressure, obesity, and even cancer. “Researchers agree that hypertension (high blood pressure) is rare in societies that consume a low-salt diet and more common among people who eat a lot of salt”(Anita Elash). This just comes to show how far Americans have gone to be able to eat such unhealthy amount of salt. Other substances that are also found are. “BHA or BHT. Ingredients like these are added to prohibit foods with oils from going rancid, thereby increasing shelf life” (Cindy Jones Shoeman)…
