The first session with Orion’s parent, I will show an attitude of understanding and explain to them ADHD is a common condition. Additionally, will reassure that it is fine if they are having negative thoughts regarding the use of medication to treat the symptoms of ADHD. At this point, I will emphases that having a consultation with the Child Psychiatrist is a great option since all we want is for help Orion and find the best treatment alternative for him. I will explain that there are community resources available to help families and will connect them with the local support agencies to get assistance. In regard to the method of therapy that will be used, I will be applying Brief Solution-Focused approach during the initial session. I want to offer them the chance to have all possible options available to minimize the feelings of frustration. This includes records management, mandated reporter, confidentiality agreement or any signed forms like for example parental consent. Due to the age of the client, in the case of Orion and his family is it vital to obtain parental consent before a consultation with the Psychiatrist.
Statistically, a child diagnosed with the ADHD spectrum disorder have a higher risk of being abused physically, emotionally or mentally. There are studies that show these facts. A study performed with 30 children diagnosed with ADHD displayed that an average of 60% of those children experienced abuse from their caregivers (Hadianford, 2014). However, if during the therapy session, I obtain facts that indicate client has received any type of abuse or harm, it is my responsibility to report the child abuse to the authorities. Lastly, it is vital to keep in mind the fact that I am considered a mandated reporter. My work as a future Marriage and Family therapist is to get educated on how to identify different types of abuses as well as to develop better listening skills to be aware of any indication of abuse when meeting with a client. Besides, it is important to accentuate that children in many cases are not able to verbalize or look for help if someone abused them.
