From her mother’s death, her emotionally unavailable father, and later her miscarriage, shows why the search for her own identity is stunted (Lee Ann De Reus). As she arrives in her hometown of Grace, memories return of her “childhood as an outsider” start to bring back memories of unacceptance (Kingsolver 30). Because of her mother’s death her father had felt his daughter’s “had been too far away to touch” making him unable to emotionally connect, therefore not being able to care for Codi or Hallie the way they needed (Kingsolver 141). Codi blames her father for her being an outcast and believes he made everyone think that she was “above [them all] in Grace” since he had also been rejected in the community and his family was considered “trash” (Kingsolver 259). Doc homer tried to make a new name for himself in his town of Grace by becoming a doctor, but only brings “every mistake he ever made” on to Codi (Kingsolver 170). As Codi grows up she tries to become everything Doc homer isn’t. The author shows us the inverse relationship they have through Codi’s regaining memory from the time of her miscarriage at sixteen, and her father’s memory loss due to…

Whereas his sister has always expressed a wish to be with their birth mother, Dwayne is fine with his life the way it is. He has a more or less good job, a beautiful fiancée, and a loving family; this news does nothing but careens him into a path of confusion and conflicts. In a comedic fantasy about what his mother would be like when she arrives, he imagines her as a stout, elderly Vietnamese woman who is clinging to the arm of an Southern American gentleman whom she met on the plane. After a few exuberant words to Dwayne about how happy she is to see him, she goes off on a date with the man, and there the fantasy ends. Obviously, his hazy image of the forgotten mother is not in a…

Billie and her mother used to fight a lot, when her mother was around. Much of the time Billie was left in the care of relatives or friends, many of whom were unloving (E). Billie's relationship with her family was very weak, as Billie throughout her life and career never or rarely got family approval or recognition (W 13). The extent to which Billie did not get along with her family is evident as she was chastised for her grandmother's death at the age of six (E). This made her family very mad and lead to their further abandonment of Billie. Aside from the superficial tension between Billie and her mother, they did their best to remain loyal to one another and provide for each other (W 201).…
