Learning Statistics Statistical data has become an item that we see all around us in our everyday lives, from television programs talking about selling products or politicians using data to show how they perform in their jobs, in hopes to be reelected. Throughout the course in Statistics for Managers, I have learned many things on how the use of statistical information can help me to understand these items and also to help me to perform my job and understand the day-to-day operation of the company. life. Because statistics is all around us, using and understanding this information is important to find answers to questions, to make better decisions, and understand how things work. Some of the types of information I have learned to use is through the use of descriptive and inferential statistics.
According to the textbook for statistics, “descriptive characteristics can provide a great economy when data sets are large. Inferential statistics are utilized when the sample’s characteristics are important for what they reveal about the entire population”. (Tanner & Youssef-Morgan, 2013) Even though there are many different kinds of descriptive statistics, the ones most used are those that explain a central tendency or a variability within the data. These are the ones that allow us to measure and analyze different information using mean, media, and mode information to draw our conclusions. Inferential statistics is all about “the process of drawing conclusions about population characteristics through analysis of the sample data” (Dell, 2013). population. From these statistical test, we are looking to create a hypothesis development and testing for the information we are trying to discover. This testing will help us find out if the predictions of the data will be a significant difference from the question or if it is of non-significance from what we are trying to determine. Performing this test will result in a null or an alternate hypothesis type of answer. The null hypothesis tells us that the comparison between the two populations of information has little or no difference. Whereas the alternate hypothesis demonstrates that there is a significance with the data and this can be used to make a determination of the data. This is stated by O’Keefe as “ rejection of the null hypothesis permits one to conclude the a nonrandom process was involved, whereas a failure to reject the null hypothesis means that one cannot rule out the possibility that the observed data arose by chance” (O 'Keefe, 2011) Just like our comparison of salaries between males and females during the class, and we are asking the question if there is a difference between the two, a null hypothesis would tell us that there is little difference and an alternate hypothesis would tell us that there is a difference in how the two genders get paid within the company. In gathering the data and performing the calculations there is also the need to make sure the proper testing is being performed.
From this course I have learned how to evaluate the information using the different forms of statistical testing. According to the Journal of Pharmaceutical Negative Results, “performing the statistical tests become easy, but selection of appropriate statistical test is still a problem.” (Jaykaran, 2010) Depending on the data and the questions asked, there may be different ways to perform the test to receive an appropriate answer. Also the questions on differences or associations, the specifics of the data, and the groups involved, will have an impact on which type of testing is the correct one to perform. In doing the research for the paper I found a few websites that have a flow chart to help people understand the appropriate test for their specific
data. Through the use of statistics we can find out lots of different information that may not seem obvious to us yet, but it can help us make decisions in everyday life. This leads into the last part of the puzzle and that is the evaluation of the information provided by these test. I now have an understanding of what all this information means and how to interpret the data used from these calculations. In most cases, it will be as simple as receiving a null hypothesis or an alternate hypothesis that will answer the questions we are asking the data to compare. This is best stated as, “decision process in sample evaluation has two components: 1) making a probability judgment that the sample is drawn from an acceptable population and 2) choosing a course of action based on that probability judgment and the relative costs of decision errors”. (Nelson, 1995) From these answers we will find that there is a statistical difference or the data is about the same, telling us which way to decide to look at our answer. Using the ability to test various data and use logic to answer a question, is the advantage of using the many different forms of statistical testing. Some of the other forms of testing are ANOVA testing, which is short for analysis of variance, and if used will allow us to compare multiple items at once using smaller samples than others. The z-test is a test that can be utilized to look at the probability that the sample being tested is comparable to a particular population. (Tanner & Youssef-Morgan, 2013) Some of the other items that can be used for testing is the t-test and the within-subjects group, are all different test that can be performed to answer a question or understand what will work best for the business and its future. What I have learned in this course is the importance of understanding the different forms of analysis and how each one will allow me to make better decisions, both at work and at home. Because every job has the need and use for statistics, I feel better about being able to comprehend the information given to us by our people at work that use these numbers and know that I can even test the theories that we have about these items. According to Bedeian,” A full understanding of the basic aspects of a study’s primary data, however, is no less essential for accurately interpreting results”. (Bedeian, 2014) Now after this course I feel that I do have a better understanding of the data and how to fully interpret the results. Because statistics is all around us, using and understanding this information is important to find answers to questions, to make better decisions, and understand how things work.
