I examine how rising or falling tide can affect the water level of Corte Madera Salt Marsh in this report. The data is from Wednesday (June 19th) and Thursday (June 20th). My hypothesis is that tide and water level have positive relationship. From the result, I learn that the water level and tide have positive relationship. However, when tide changes its direction, the water level is likely to stay or little change.…

The Chequamegon Bay is on Lake Superior, one of the 5 Great Lakes. Climate change could affect ports, harbors and marinas in two different ways. This is considered a shallow port that will be affected by large amounts of water going into the bay or by evaporation and lack of water going into the bay. One-way climate change may affect the bays harbors, ports and marinas is lower lake levels. Low lake levels can cause commercial and recreational boats to bottom out, keep the boats from reaching docks and the ability to launch boats at public boat launches. Another way climate change can affect the bays harbors, ports and marina is damage from storms. Large rainfalls increase the amount of watershed put into the bay. Along with an increase in sediment this also affects the water level. High water levels can damage existing structures like marinas and ports. Dredging has been done in the port when water levels were low and docks have been moved or extended for access by boats. Large ore docks have already been removed from the Chequamegon Bay due in part to environmental damage. My father used to work on the large ore boats on the great lakes. We would go see one of these docks that were located next to the city of Ashland on the bay. The ore dock was a massive structure that seemed indestructible, especially by water levels rising or lowering.…

Imagine you are in a boat right off the shores of Greece. You happen to look up and out of the corner of your eye you see something. As your gaze adjusts, you notice it's a killer whale, being torn away from his home. A large net encloses in in, attached to a large ship. Now, imagine you are sitting in the stands at SeaWorld, surrounded by hundreds of people, people waiting so eagerly to lay eyes on this year’s rendition of “Shamu”. When you look into the cement “pool”, you see him. You see the majestic, beautiful, free, wild animal now in captivity. Only, this time, he looks tired, old, neglected, abused, and lifeless. This is exactly what SeaWorld is doing to killer whales. They take these wild animals out of their natural habitat and force them into captivity.…

The areas near the Pacific Ocean are generally characterized by small temperature variations during the year, with cool foggy summers and mild rainy winters. Inland areas, especially those separated from the ocean by hills or mountains, have hotter summers and colder overnight temperatures during the winter (weather.gov). San Jose at the south end of the Bay averages fewer than 15 inches of rain annually, while Napa at the north end of the Bay averages over 30 inches and parts of the Santa Cruz…

If you want to run your saltwater aquarium based on what experienced aquarists say, you should be trying for a salinity level of as close to 3.5% as possible. Even veterans will struggle getting accurate salinity measurements with no equipment to keep them on the right track, which is why I suggest you purchase the Instant Ocean SeaTest Hydrometer. This hydrometer will measure your tank’s salt levels, as well as its specific gravity and can be purchased for well under…

My mother had found a zoo online that was located in our city and decided that it would be fun to check it out. I had my doubts since I had always trusted well-known zoos such as the San Diego Zoo, but in the end I too decided it would be worth looking into. It was Saturday noon, when my mom, dad, and I left for the zoo. When we were halfway there we came upon a bumpy road scattered with rocks. My father told us that it was used in winter to keep the cars from slipping on the icy road. But I could only think of one thing at that moment, the immense headache which the constant bumping on the road brought me. I complained that we should’ve gone to the Humane Society. It was right near the house and there wasn’t a bumpy road we had to cross when…

The world is currently undergoing changes unlike ever recorded before in human history. Record breaking temperatures are occurring more frequently, carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions are at their highest rates since the Jurassic period, and a rapidly increasing population, fully reliant on our planets natural resources, are beginning to push the earth to its limit. On a local level, these environmental changes are having a significant impact on California’s environment. If this trend continues, California could experience devastating blows to its agriculture industry, a massive source of revenue. Perhaps the most important question to ask ourselves right now is; how can we reduce the impact that we have on California’s environment? So that we may…

National environmental organizations included Friends of the Earth, National Audubon Society, Sierra Club, The Nature Conservancy, and Wilderness Society had chapters or offices in Massachusetts. The Appalachian Mountain Club was regional, with chapters throughout the Northeast U.S. By contrast, Mass Audubon, Trustees of Reservations and MASSPIRG confined their activities to Massachusetts. Although organizations sometimes worked in coalitions to advocate specific political agenda, they also competed for funding and, to some extent, for members. On occasion, some of them had even competed for the same piece of environmentally sensitive property. The Nature Conversancy protected 17,000 acres in the state, Mass Audubon held 29,000 acres, and The Trustees of Reservations had more than 45,000 acres. Many other nonprofit organizations operated individual sanctuaries and nature centers or preserved land from development through land trusts.…
