Ocean Lab Report
Corte Madera Scientific Report

Abstract

I examine how rising or falling tide can affect the water level of Corte Madera Salt Marsh in this report. The data is from Wednesday (June 19th) and Thursday (June 20th). My hypothesis is that tide and water level have positive relationship. From the result, I learn that the water level and tide have positive relationship. However, when tide changes its direction, the water level is likely to stay or little change.

Introduction

On June 19th, my classmates and I had field trip for Oceanography Lab (OCN 101) class with Professor Ocean Matt Horrigan. We went to Corte Madera Salt Marsh, which is located 12 miles North of San Francisco, to examine how rising and falling of tide effect on water level in the marsh and channel. My hypothesis is tide and water level of marsh and channel has positive relationship. The rising tide may raise the water level of marsh and falling tide make water level of marsh decrease. Therefore, since our experiment was limited in few hours, the water level of marsh will be changed (up or down) in few centimeters. The location map (M-1) and study area map (M-2) will be attached on next page.

Methods

To measure and compare the water level of marsh and channel, the class moved along the levy and placed meter sticks into marsh (B) and opposing channel (A). We had four locations for variable: The T (1), Caution Sign (2), Meris’ Bench (3), and the Point (4). Since the meter sticks were not exactly placed to set ‘0’ as the begging of change, the ‘0’ was adjusted depend on the location. The experiment location started with 1 to 4 and came back from 4 to 1. Therefore, each location has different elapsed time. For example, site 4 (The Point) has shortest time because we put meter sticks and took off without any moving location.

Result

Our data has two tables because it contains data from two classes. First data is from Wednesday 19th (T-1), which is our class and the other data is

This lab report is on the trip to Montara beach were we studied sediments on the coast line. In figure 1 it shows the location of Montara beach, which is located south of San Francisco near Pacifica. The purpose of the trip was to discover layers of sediment and understand the properties of them, like grain size, composite, organization and so forth. As shown in figure 2 you can see that Montara beach has quaternary sediment, meaning its sediment is younger than what its surround by. This data helps geologist determine how old the rock is and what kind of geological events have occurred to it and near it. The observations of modern processes helps to interrupt ancient events by examining the sediment and looking at the way it was deposited to show where the sediment was once from and what it will from to later on. I notice that the first high tide of each day has an average of about 5.38 feet while the 2nd high tide has an average of about 5 feet. Vertical zonation seems to exist on most rocky shores but communities that make up these zones differ depending on extent of exposure. Lose endless hours exploring rockpools. Variety of habitats and zones within. Deep and shallow tidal pools. Rocks that dry completely. Rocks that are only exposed at very low spring tides. Dark sheltered crevices. Wide open pools. Life very diverse Living things have to be adaptable. Tolerant or able to survive drying out dessication, temperature ranges – first life to leave the sea evolved here. Dries out twice a day. Significant wave height is used as an alternative to wave energy and is important in studying the vulnerability of shorelines. Wave energy increases as the square root of the wave height, thus the ability to mobilize and transport beach or coastal materials is a function of wave height. The wave energy increases with increase in the wave height, which results in loss of land area due to increased erosion and in-undation along shore, so those coastal areas of high wave height are considered as more vulnerable coast sand areas of low wave height as less vulnerable…

The current estimate concerns the change in the average sea level in the long term. In addition, the impact of waves and other changes in the short-term variation of the sea level must be taken into account in building and other activities on the coast. In the near future, the Finnish Meteorological Institute will update its estimates of the lowest recommended building heights, where these factors will also be considered.…

When people visit a beach, they might realize the daily rise and fall of the water, or how high and low tides can get. Tides are caused by the moon, sun, and the earth and are almost never are the same size or duration. A tide can spread out to be much bigger than what it was predicted to be (Simon 1990). The easiest tidal sequence is the semidiurnal tide. A semidiurnal tide has two high tides and two low tides of about equal height each day.Semidiurnal tides may have a daily inequity where successive hide tides have different heights. Semidiurnal tides are often easy to predict because high or low tides occur a consistent length of time after the moon has passed overhead. Both the Atlantic and the Indian Oceans generally have some semidiurnal tides with two other tides each day. Spring tides normally occur when there is a full moon and the sun and the earth are in a straight line. When this happens, tides are never the same size or last the same amount of time as the people may expect. There is also neap tides and they occur when the moon is in the first or last quarter, when its gravitational pull on the oceans is at a right angle to the sun. When this happens the tide will not be the same size or last the same amount of time either.(Hawkins 2005).…
