The tides of dirty water

The Tides
Intro
The location I chose for this project is the Charles River in Boston Massachusetts. The Charles River had been referred to as one of the dirtiest rivers in the US throughout history due to the Watertown Arsenal that had been full of gunpowder as well as other artilleries and firearms. The Charles River had also been used for the much of America’s hydropower with its dam. The Charles River had been used in the hit Boston based band, Dropkick Murphy’s song, “Dirty Water”. I chose the date of February 14 because of how Feb. 14 is Valentine’s Day, and what better way to spend Valentines Day than looking at a dirty river. Also during February you can see that the river slowly begins to melt and the tides begin to increase.

1. I had seen a patter with every other high tide as well as every other low tide. I notice that the first high tide of each day has an average of about 5.38 feet while the 2nd high tide has an average of about 5 feet. The same pattern goes with the low tides in where the first low tide of the day had an average of about -.29 feet while the 2nd has and average of about -.02 feet.
2. I would say that the pattern is predictable due to the fact the pattern shown above only deviates by .1 feet at most.
3. The moon will have a significant impact on the high tide because when I look up the tides of February 24th which is on the same day as a full moon, the tides are at a distance between 9-10 feet while the low tide is almost a whole foot closer to shore than ten days before (Feb 14- Feb 17).
4. Another natural phenomena that is modeled by sin/cosine functions are earthquakes. A high amplitude means that the earthquake had a higher magnitude.
5. I would predict that due to the pattern a low tide at 11 a am will be higher than the earlier low tide. Also due to the fact that a full moon is approaching I

Longshore drift is also a geographical process caused by waves. It happens as a result of a longshore current, occurring due to the angle of the wind direction. A longshore current produces waves breaking at an angle to the shoreline, which generates longshore movement. Longshore drift is the movement of sand along the coast, usually occurring within the surf zone. Longshore drift is a geographical process that is a major player in the shaping or evolution of a shoreline.…

Change began when nearly a century ago, when 125-foot high Condit Dam was constructed on the White Salmon River to provide cheap electricity in a region hungry for industrial development. The decision to block the White Salmon River for hydropower came at a price; the abundant salmon, steelhead, and lamprey that once returned there were lost. Also lost were the tribal fisheries and cultural activities that are inseparable from the presence of these foods. All life is intertwined.…

At this time the high tides are higher than normal and the low tides are lower thn normal. This is known as a spring tide. Spring tides are especially strong tides (but they do not have anything to do with the season Spring). They occur when the Earth, the Sun, and the Moon are in a line. The gravitational forces of the Moon and the Sun both, make the tides much stronger. During the moon's quarter phases the sun and moon work at right angles causing the bulges to cancel each other out. As a result there is a much smaller difference between high and low tides and is known as a neap tide. Neap tides are very weak tides. They occur when the gravitational forces of the Moon and the Sun are perpendicular to one…

As mentioned in the paragraph above I mentioned that it could ruin marine life, that was no joke. The animals could become homeless because the tide would retract so any animal that lives close to shore would die. Also some animals depend on the movement of the tide to live. The reason all of these animals are going to die is because the tide would be retracted to ⅓ of its normal size.…

My first view of the river makes me breathless. Shallow water washes over the road’s cement pavement. Men, women, and kids break the river’s flow; some sit in fold-up chairs and read a book, but most others are leaning back in a colored tube floating the slow water. A giant cypress tree waits patiently by the road; two large nails pin a rusted metal sign to it, warning visitors of state rules and regulations. Every river crossing has the same sign posted the closet tree. The tree’s familiar sight and significance still makes me excited, because I finally feel summer vacation starting. However, the sight also makes me impatient for we don’t start tubing until the second day. I never…
