My children and I volunteered to help set up the facility for this year’s Thanksgiving dinner. The day before Thanksgiving we drove to downtown Atlanta to the Georgia World Congress and Convention Center. We were amazed by the number of volunteers already there. There were people from all walks of life, executives, athletes, clergy, housewives and fathers, and even some people who were clearly in need themselves.…

When the Pilgrims crossed the Atlantic Ocean in 1620, they landed on the rocky shores of a territory that was inhabited by the Wampanoag (Wam pa NO ag) Indians. The Wampanoags were part of the Algonkian-speaking peoples, a large group that was part of the Woodland Culture area. These Indians lived in villages along the coast of what is now Massachusetts and Rhode Island. They lived in round- roofed houses called wigwams. These were made of poles covered with flat sheets of elm or birch bark. Wigwams differ in construction from tipis that were used by Indians of the Great Plains.…

When we consolidated around the Thanksgiving dessert table for a slice of delicious Apple pie, we all attempted to grab the dominate slice over the others. Somehow the pie was not as great tasting as we anticipated. The texture as well was off, as if it was a thin rubber. We decided to cut into the pie to examine the base of each pie slice. It appeared that the people who escorted the pie to the house we gathered in, managed to bring a counterfeit cinnamon pie used for display purposes. We had to wait as my grandmother taught my distant cousin who was docile to create an official Apple Pie. The Pie was… burnt. That was my fictional anecdote over at my Thanksgiving collaboration.…

Thanksgiving is considered by many as being the worse meal of the year. Why? Because of the extreme overload of high-starch carbs that trigger blood sugar spikes for so many people. Just think of it. Pumpkin pie with a scoop or two of ice cream, corn bread stuffing, mashed potatoes, sugar-laden cranberry sauce and green bean casserole, that's why.…

Personally, I’m going to have to say no. The painting does a very horrendous job at depicting the relationship between the Wampanoag Indians and the Pilgrims during the First Thanksgiving. The painting is very simplistic. In other words, it fails to recognize the crucial details of what actually led up to the First Thanksgiving, and what occurred afterward as a result of the Peace treaty between the Pilgrims and the Wampanoag Indians. There’s a lot more to the story of Thanksgiving. The painting only focuses on a very small piece of the whole ordeal and fails to capture the big picture of it all.…

If you can’t cook, don’t volunteer. This is not the time to learn how to cook. If the holiday was high school, Thanksgiving is the senior class and you are the freshman. It’s not a time to learn to cook. Leave that for your graduation. Volunteer to bring drinks or a fruit tray, you will look like a winner.…
