Case Study The Tao Of Timbuk2
There are many key competitive priorities that are the driving sales force behind Timbuk2 custom messenger bags, but they all fall under one simple word: quality. The company takes pride that their bags are “more than a brand, more than a bag” (Jacobs & Chase, 2010). They are dependable-many customers has had their bags for decades. They are considered to be indestructible. They are also uniquely custom to each customer, customers develops a strong, emotional attachment between themselves and their bags. “This San Francisco-based company is known for producing high-quality custom and classic messenger bags directed to customer order” (Jacobs & Chase, 2010). Recently, Timbuk2 has begun dabbling into laptop bags that are being produced out of China. Their key competitive priority is to produce a great quality bag for less the cost.
As for volume or rate of production: the China factory should be able to turn out more product because they have more people working and better specialized machinery to handle larger order. As for required skill of the workers, the china factory will probably see more division of labor because of the bigger factory setting. The San Francisco plant would have more technical workers because their factory is smaller and deals with customized bags rather than bulk laptop bags. As for level of automation, China factory would need more of the automation than the San Francisco factory because of the size of the bulk being delivered and the specialized machines that can handle complexity. As for the amount of raw material and finished goods inventory: China factory probably has more raw materials coming in because of the bigger bulk output. The San Francisco plant would need a sizable share of raw materials as well because of the customized ordered bags.

    eBags strategy model consists of an internet website that is designed to bring the customer closer to the manufacturer. eBags does that by providing a wide array of quality brand name products to their website. This website gave the people a larger selection than they would get in a storefront and eliminated the travel expenses. They designed a user friendly website that allows the customer to search for products with small details such as type, brand, size, and price. eBags has been able to build a good relationship with over 300 suppliers and has increased their Stock Keeping Units (SKU) to over 15,000 which contributes to its success. They have been able to minimize the high inventory holding cost by implementing a drop-ship model. This model has its issues though as they can not always control the shipping schedule and it has a lower profit margin. Part of eBags success is due to their transparent relationship with their vendors. They created a system called the eBags Partner Network (EPN) that allows vendors to update their SKU’s in real time. It also allows the vendors access to a scorecard system that allows them to track their own sales, returns, and ratings. eBags knows that in order to continue to see the same growth they have been experiencing they have to expand their products. They are attempting to gain a foothold in the footwear industry using the same strategy they used in the luggage industry. eBags is also trying to start a European branch to their website. This would cater to a market that currently consist of only modest shops with limited operating hours. eBags is still developing their strategy model today as they decide whether to sell other products and whether they should branch out of the United States.…

    I would like to say that I chose the Tao Te Ching, however, it chose me. I was first introduced to this text one Christmas morning, many years ago, and it has been with me (in one way or another) ever since. Due to my lifestyle I was constantly losing my copy, and in my attempts to replace it I had the pleasure of owning a multitude of versions, and differing translations. Today I will be using the 1988 publication of the Tao Te Ching as translated by author Stephen Mitchell (as my primary source). One of the main reasons I chose Mitchell’s translation is because he uses “she” instead of the conventional “he” throughout his text. I found this to be refreshing and Mitchell explains this by in the forward to his book, “The Chinese language doesn’t make this kind of distinction; in English we have to choose. But since we are all, potentially, the Master (since the Master is, essentially, us), I felt it would be untrue to present a male archetype, as other versions have, ironically, done” (pp.ix, Mitchell).…
