Without them, classes would not have their place, invasions would fail and nobels would not protect their people as effectively. Under feudalism, monarchs gave much of their land to their strongest nobles as fief in return for the nobles' commitments to provide knights on horseback to combat the invaders. To obtain the services of these knights, the nobles would give up some of the land they had received to lower-ranking nobles, who promised to supply some of the knights needed. This second tier of nobles would repeat the process with weaker nobles. When raids occurred, the king would call on his vassals for knights, who would in turn call on their vassals. The military needed them, so it greatly effect them and other classes when castles were attacked. Castles took advanced craftsmen and special tools to make them as beautiful as possible. This took a lot of people and time, however in turn it brought the people pride. The military's job was to protect their castle, and use it as their home base. Ever changing warfare methods made knights jobs difficult. As Castles evolved in to strong well built buildings, weapons were built to take them down. Without castles in the Middle Ages, military would be very different. The people would have a very difficult time taking over land. Some land that we know as owned by a certain place may be completely different had castles not existed.
