In the case of Brock Turner and his execrable decision to rape an unconscious woman outside a fraternity house at Stanford University is most appalling and like any crime committed the consequence should be given in order that, that particular offender might have time to reflect on what they have done. In this particular case Turner has proven that the term rape is deemed so little in the eyes of the law. Instead of receiving a six year sentence he was simply given six months in an institution. Six years or six months no matter the sentence that young lady will be forever be scarred by what he has done to her physically, and emotionally. In her recent statement she said “My independence”, natural joy, gentleness, and steady lifestyle I had…
An argument can be made that sex offenders have been marginalized by society by their actions (no judgment is intended here). Therefore, should they also be accorded the same benefits that are provided by our Government to our citizenry? A sex offender might make the case that if he or she is employed and paying taxes that they should also be able to benefit from federal or state programs that their taxes contribute to. The American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) believes that federal laws requiring lifetime registration and the restriction of federal funds to states that do not comply with federal sex offender legislation violate the rights of sex offenders. Worse yet, these federal and state mandates (I.e. registration and housing assistance) may actually put children and society at greater risk to sexual offenses because they do not address the underlying causes of sex offenses or educational programs that properly address the controversial issue (Hardenbergh, 2009, p.…
A longer prison sentence is nothing but a joke to the common criminal, with jails and prisons being so “comfortable” now. Any criminal that keeps his or her head down and their nose clean can get any sentence cut in half for “good behavior.” Not to mention the entire system is too crowded as is and society knows it.…
-Despite their differences, the growth of the colonial population produced an almost continuous line of settlement along the seacoast and led to the gradual construction of roads and the rise of intercolonial trade. Colonial postal services also helped increase communication.…
Thousands of people are sexually abused every year, however not all sex offenders are ever apprehended. There really is no description as to who is a sex offender as they can seem normal and be highly intelligent. They have been known to premeditate and to use deceptive techniques to get what they want (Crosson-Tower, 2008). Many believe that sexual offenders should be monitored for the rest of their lives because statistics show that they are likely to repeat their first offense and to ensure the safety of society.…
This article is a proposal to end the early release of violent criminals. Violent criminals continue to pose a major threat to society. Every year, the lives of thousands of citizens are shattered or taken by criminals who were released earlier than they should have. Many of these criminals have been incarcerated several times for the same crimes.…
In the story A Christmas Carol , my reaction changed towards Scrooge through each stave. In the first opening stave, you felt as if Scrooge was an inconsiderate, horrible man. Throughout the rest of the staves you start to feel bad for Scrooge and almost forgive him. Also his past reflects his personality in the future. This influences my reaction towards Scrooge as Dickens uses contradicting and contrasting techniques. The moral I received was; dickens is trying to convey to the reader is that you can always be forgiven for what you have done in the past.…
Society has used several methods to treat sex offenders. First, they used sex offender treatment programs (SOTP). Over the years, studies have shown that SOTP was ineffective. A second method used included surgical sterilization and castration. During the early 1900’s this was the preferred method of treatment because society didn’t want a sexual offender to reproduce. However, research has found physical changes to the body do not change sexual drive (178). The third method used includes a surgical method in which the brain is modified. This is a highly effective method in treating sexual offenders but is very expensive, difficult to perform…
Good post. I also believe that female juveniles should be allowed in the same programs as male juveniles. Unfortunately, majority of rehabilitative juvenile programs are for males. By not dealing with these females, we are not giving them the same opportunity that are available to boys in the juvenile justice system. The juvenile justice system needs to do more to meet the needs of female offenders.…
They need to sit in prison with the knowledge of what they did until they die either of old age or sickness. When given the death sentence you don’t have to face what you did. You are getting off the hook by dying and you don’t have to think about what you did. You are just fed and then killed. You don’t have to think about everything you did that you shouldn’t have done and the crimes you have committed. Also it isn’t fair to tell the kids that they can’t hurt someone for hurting them yet, kill someone for killing someone or raping someone. The death sentence is an escape from the crime they…
When you hear the word offender some have a reaction of fear and prejudice, thinking the worst of what this person has done. What about juvenile offenders that are not yet old enough to be held fully responsible for their actions, are they any less of a threat? Each state has their own predetermined statues for these young offenders but that does not change how they are seen by others. This is a population that I believe needs a voice to help them be seen in a light other than that of a criminal.…
While there is an agreement that offenders are responsible for their actions against society, the sentencing to jail (or prison), is the issue on which…
I chose to observe a sex offenders group at office of an association of licensed professional counselors in Hinesville, Georgia. The group consisted of 9 sex offenders and the counselor, who was a woman, and myself. The group meet in the evening and everyone was present and on time. We sat in a circle, and I was introduced. I had to sign a confidentiality agreement, and the guys signed something stating they didn’t mind my being there. There were no introductions, as everyone knew each other. Group therapy is seen as the most appropriate form of treatment in the United States. The rationale for this is the argument that sex offenders require group therapy because effective confrontation of manipulative behavior can only be done by other individuals who have been through the same dynamic. Groups are seen as necessary and appropriate for all sexual offenders, regardless of their individual personalities and the factors underlying their abusive behavior (Grossman, Martis, & Fichter, 1999).…
In cases like these we should look real deep in the case not just because is rape or sexual assault but rather than is the offender may have done this before. Therefore we should consider a bigger punishment for them. We also got to consider that many people that done this type of crimes there old and have committed their first crime. We must think a realize that why are we putting people for their rest of his life in a prison and why we won’t just give him or she a death penalty. We are leaving someone for life in facility he or she is going to live on and die on. Now the elderly offenders are just taking space and money from the facilities. The money and the space can be use for more products to produce and farm to grow their food…. We most do something about it ether at a certain age we released those who In the facility behave good and follow directions we can make them go in work so when they get out of prison. They all ready will have a job to progress in the real world . I been asking these questions to family members, friend, teachers, and students. “What do you think about releasing offenders at age of 65? I got some interesting opinions. Like if they commit some type of crimes like sexual abuse whit a minor, first degree murder. What really cut my eye is that most of the surprising answers where from the students. That the facilities…
The number of registered sex offenders have increasingly grew over the years. Every day you see a man or women added to the registry for crimes against women and mostly children. The sex offender registries biggest and main focus is to keep the people in the community in each city and state informed and protected. ”Sex offenders and sex crimes provoke a great deal of anxiety in our society.” Baker, J, Brannon, Y, N., Fortney. , Levenson, J.S. (“Public Perceptions about Sex Offenders and Community Protection”). The sex offender registry is based solely on protecting the public from being a victim to sexual assault. However the public does hold dome wrong beliefs about registered sex offenders. Many people in the community feel that sex offenders can’t be treated at all.…
