What should have been a day of shopping turned tragic on July 27th, 1981 when 6 year old Adam Walsh was abducted from a Sears Department store as his mother walked away a short distance to look for something (Thomas, & Michels, 2008). After a massive manhunt underwent, roughly two weeks after his disappearance, sadly Adam’s decapitated head was found on August 10th, 1981. After Adam’s death his father became an advocate for missing children. He helped co-found the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children and in 1988 he hosted "America's Most Wanted" (Thomas, & Michels, 2008).
Thousands of people are sexually abused every year, however not all sex offenders are ever apprehended. There really is no description as to who is a sex offender as they can seem normal and be highly intelligent. They have been known to premeditate and to use deceptive techniques to get what they want (Crosson-Tower, 2008). Many believe that sexual offenders should be monitored for the rest of their lives because statistics show that they are likely to repeat their first offense and to ensure the safety of society.

The Adam Walsh Child Protection and Safety Act is one way to monitor sex offenders however it can’t stop everything on its own. With the help of probation and parole teams, the use of unannounced searches and enforcing a rehabilitation program provides a strong sense of protection of our children. Just because you have a sex offender mandated to register themselves, it is like a band-aide, as the perpetrator is getting no form of prevention treatment.
