Adam Shepard had $25 dollars and a dream and chris mccandless had nothing but himself and wanting to experience everything on his own. Upon Adam’s arrival in Charleston, with only $25, a sleeping bag, a duffel bag, and the clothes on his back , he makes his way to a homeless shelter in a rough part of town. The place looked neat enough from the outside, but it had dirty floors, unclean showers, bathrooms that appeared to have never been cleaned. Even worse, the homeless shelter is surrounded by drug use and other temptations, and dishonest employers are constantly getting workers from the shelter and employing them in very difficult, low-opportunity jobs. Shepard had a strong motivation on finishing his journey and had something to prove to the people that doubted him and didn't think he will accomplish this dream. When Adam shepard tried applying for jobs he went to “Fast Company” and demanded curtis to give him a job. Shepard stated “ Curtis, my man , i don't want to sit here in front of you and be disrespectful to any of your workers out there, because i'm sure they're all good guys, but,uh, i'm pretty much one of the hardest working guys you're going to find in charleston.” (97) Shepard is also willing to work for free and if curtis doesn't like him then he can stop working there . Shepard will work no matter what and that shows that he is responsible and Ambitious. Therefore, Adam Shepherd cares more about what he's doing and he's more self-reliant then chris mccandless. Chris mccandless never cared about his family and never came in touch with them. He stated in death of an innocent that he was “ Just alex” (1). He didn't want people to know the real him and in people's view that was a cruel thing to do and lie to people. Chris just left and didn't tell anyone.
