Cause and Effect of being a student-athlete

The dedication and self-motivation required to balancing schoolwork and practice is the most difficult part of being a student-athlete. I find that being a student-athlete plays out to be much harder than most people think. It’s very difficult especially at the beginning of the year, when it finally hits you that you’re growing up and finally have to do your own laundry. You’re not only getting your-self situated as far as classes go, but also meeting new people. You have to balance all the new tasks in your life as well as starting new relationships.
One obvious cause of wanting to become a student-athlete is the persona. Everyone wants to be the star athlete and everyone wants to be the cool kid on the sports team that gets all the chicks. This is something that we were raised around, all the professional athletes getting praised as kings while walking around with a supermodel around their arm. I mean who wouldn’t want that kind of life?
Being a student-athlete is something that you can take pride in. You want to take pride in yourself by representing your team in athletics but also want to further your education by acquiring a degree witch causes you to be a student athlete. It also makes you stand out among the rest because not only are you a full time student but also a full time athlete. Which gives you life skills like motivation and determination that you take with you through out life. Above all it gives your parents something to brag about to their siblings because their twenty three year old son is still living in their house, while flipping burgers down the street. The major cause of being a student-athlete is that you want to have friends. Sure being a student-athlete teaches you how to balance a crazy life style and creates better time management but it also allows you to create great friendships. With schoolwork and practice you usually don’t have

In the short story “Becoming a Student Athlete”, Terry Telphy discusses some of the issues he encountered during his Freshman year in high school. He had a problem balancing being a great student and being a phenomenal athlete. He proudly revealed he excelled as a football player by committing extra time and effort to make sure he would make the team and be an impact player on the field. The summer before entering 9th grade, obviously he could balance the heavy load of being an athlete, but when the semester started and homework started piling up, he no longer could put all of his effort into sports and little into school. Terry wanted great things to happen in his life — He wanted to graduate high school, go to college, and did not want to…

Sports can unite a whole university together by giving all students a common interest as well as a sense of belonging to their school. An article from Chronicle of Higher Educated stated, “Sports teams can foster a deep sense of community and social solidarity, even when those teams lose more often than they win” (Clotfelter, 2010, p. 155).…

As recorded by “Pay or Scholarship” by Teengagement they state “Ultimately, sports isn’t just about a love of the game, even in college. It’s about business too.” This implies that most college athletes do not play sports just for having a good time, but to start their life. This also means that a college athlete may love the sport they play, however it is also about their future in that sport. Overall, playing sports isn’t only about the game but the overall building of a person, preparing them for the real world after college.…

“Don't walk through life just playing football. Don't walk through life just being an athlete. Athletics will fade. Character and integrity and really making an impact on someone's life, that's the ultimate vision, that's the ultimate goal - bottom line; according to " Ray Lewis (Brainy Quotes). A college athlete can be described using numerous words, but the biggest one is motivated. Almost every athlete has worked to be where there are today. Some harder than others, some gifted with god given talent, but one thing nobody can deny is the fact of being motivated to succeed. A college athlete is expected to balance everyday situations while being active in sports outside of life itself. This is something they strive to be great at, something they want more than anything.…

College athletes should get the opportunity to major in their sport so they can improve their ability and knowledge of the sport that they play. Also athletes might find studying their sport more enjoyable and they will be motivated to learn. For example, students who go to college to study music or theater are no different then a student athlete because they both get to do something they interested in. Except some college athletes feel like school is something they have to do just to keep their scholarship. But if they had sports major’s athletes will see this as a way to get better at something they love to…

Student-athletes choose either sports or academics to focus more on. Generally, most students will prefer sports. Most athletes can become distracted from academics, which unmotivates students, by many factors: the sport itself, teammates, and time. Although athletics teach many life skills such as responsibility and leadership, athletes need time in the classroom too (Denhart). The biggest issue is not having enough time for everything. Student-athletes need time to…

These athletes have to balance school and their sport at the same time which can be a large feat. Even not playing a sport, college gives students a lot of stress and anxiety and I cannot even imagine balancing a sport that takes up over 40 hours a week and all the other responsibilities that come with being a college student. “Their (college athletes) schedule also includes a full-time college schedule that they must maintain if they want to stay in the school and continue playing college sports. If a student has 10 hours of class each week and puts in the recommended four hours of study for each hour of class, then athletes spend 50 hours each week studying and attending mandatory classes and study halls.” (Listland)…

You want to be able to leave school with a diploma cause less than one percent of collegiate athletes go on to play a pro sport. Even if a student athlete goes on to the pros, their career will last less than 20 years. Life certainly doesn’t end there. Another reason a student-athlete has to make sure their grades are good in class is to be able to play and practice. I as an athlete have to make sure I am in compliance with NCAA grade policy. NCAA has step the bench mark GPA at 2.00. If a student-athlete falls below that mark they often have to sit for a whole term, commonly referred to as academic probation. This can put a death sentence on an athlete’s season. It can also drastically affect your relationship with the team and ultimately the coach. Academic probation has ended great college athletes’ careers for the simple fact that they were not as committed to school as they were in their respective sport. The hardest part of class, from my experiences is not getting up and going to it. Skipping can really become a habit, especially when you’re a freshman. I know if I make an effort to get to class everyday there is no way I can’t at least past my classes Lastly you came to college so that you can do what you really want to do later in life. As my coach told me in high school “You will never go down this path…

Athletic sports are not just an extracurricular activity; they are also a very good way to get into college. Athletics have the ability to give many kids the chance of going to college who never had the opportunity before. Yes, it may be hard to get a scholarship in athletics but it still gets one more student to college than before. According to Mark Kantrowitz (a nationally-recognized expert on student financial aid, scholarships and student loans) 2% of high school athletes get scholarships, but what people don’t understand is this motivates student athletes to have better grades in school. Athletes are required to maintain at least a 2.0 grade point average with no F’s in order to play their sport, which is still enough to graduate. This is more than what the average student is required to maintain alone. The non-athlete student is more likely to have lower grade with just the fact that they will have nothing taken away from them. The National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) did made a chart of how many high school, athletes move onto college, 3.0% of Men’s Basketball, 3.3% of Women’s Basketball, 6.1% of Baseball, 11% of Men's Ice Hockey, 5.7% of Football, and 5.5% of Men’s Soccer athletes move on to play sports in college in the NCAA.…

Interscholastic sports within high schools and colleges are frequently debated by athletes and non-athletes. Those in favor of having sports apart of the school’s environment believe that they increase involvement in academic activities, build self-esteem and promotes community support for school programs. In my personal experiences, I have found this true as students can come together and show support for their school’s respective team despite having outside differences. Individuals against interscholastic sports argue the numerous disadvantages that it can have on a student’s academic life. Reasons include that sports can distract students from academic activities, deprive educational programs of resources and give athletes an unfair privilege…
