Hamlet Cause and Effect Essay
Individuals may find peace and happiness throughout their lifetime, viewing it as a complete
fulfilment and endless enjoyment. Sometimes, however, peace and happiness does not last forever and
is just a temporary feeling that eventually disappears. Human nature is included with various elements
impacting the way an individual tries to live delightfully. This aspect includes concepts such as
violence, the ruler 's decisions, government laws, etc. This way of life is very relevant in Shakespeare 's
play Hamlet, which covers the competency of love, hate and power struggles found within the

later leads to an unfortunate ending. In Act IV, Scene V King Claudius begins his
speech with the line, “Oh, this is the poison of deep grief. It springs all from her father 's death, and now
behold!”(Shakespeare, 49-50).
He approaches the queen with this speech after being informed that
Hamlet killed one of his closest friends, Polonius. Claudius 's happiness dramatically changes into a
sense of disappointment, anxiety, and anger making him furious with Hamlet. Hamlet 's actions result in
a negative impact towards Claudius which furthermore affects the people of the Elizabethan era
because of Claudius 's behaviour presenting authority, weakness, and humanity grasped by him.
Firstly, due to the presence of authority in Claudius 's behaviour, it portrays how when one
obtains authority it can lead to having a safe or a vulnerable environment. After King Claudius hears of
Hamlet 's sinful act, he urges to prosecute and arrest Hamlet soon but declines this thought because of
his popularity to the public. However he tells Laertes, “Break not your sleeps for that ... You shortly
shall hear more. I loved your father, and we love ourself ..”(Shakespeare, 30-34), giving him an idea
that he has a method of taking revenge on Hamlet. The hatred that develops in Claudius against Hamlet Mashal 2
has no end of being expressed, which is why he will go out of his way just to eliminate Hamlet. …show more content…
The
authority and frustration that Claudius presents affects the audience of the Elizabethan era because it
may create fear and anxiety upon them. Also, because of the great amount of power that Claudius now
has, it may also influence how open minded he is. Claudius may choose to only do what he wants
rather than taking the advice of others, therefore creating more dilemmas. On the other hand, the
amount of fear and pressure put onto the Elizabethan era may be able to prevent one to not commit any
crime due to the harsh tone and harmful plan he generates. Since Claudius is now the King of
Denmark, the amount of authority he has towards his kingdom greatly impacts the people of his
country and how they live.
Secondly, showing weakness through one 's actions and words can affect the way one
comprehends the play. This significant quality is found in a human defining who you really are. At the
start of the play, Claudius is seen as an intelligent and experienced leader. However, his true qualities
are revealed when he gets placed in very emotional and difficult situations. When Claudius hears of
Polonius 's death he becomes sensitive and sad because of this personal loss. At the same time he is also
very worried since his plans with Hamlet are not going as planned. Furthermore, Claudius is also put in
a tough situation when Laertres hears of his father 's death and then promptly makes his way to
Claudius in order to put the blame on the King for the murder. Claudius begins to defend himself
fearfully and states, “Good Laertes, If you desire to know the certainty of your dear father 's death, it 't
writ in your revenge, that swoopstake, you will draw both friend and foe, winner and loser?”
(Shakespeare, 114-118). This line is stated by Claudius ceasing down the angry emotions Laertes has
towards him.
However, he says while still fearful of the outcome from Laertes. This scene affects the
audience of the Elizabethan era confusing them of how truly a King needs to act in front of his people.
In this case, Claudius presents fear and anxiety rather than being superior and powerful like any other

King.
Thirdly, being in the state of power and authority may be lacking overtime due to the
consequence of developing weakness and lack of qualifications of that position. This concept
sometimes occurs in an individual 's life because of the feeling of guilt had they done something which
slowly consumes them, feeling the need to change. King Claudius commits various mistakes and sins
throughout his life to get where he wants and what he wants. However, after he views the tragic acts of
Hamlet and notices he is not receiving anything beneficial, he realizes he needs to change.
His lack of control towards people, power, and the fact that he does not think ahead are all affecting
him negatively. Owing to the thought that before Hamlet commits anything tragic, he should have
gotten help for Hamlet because of his odd behaviour. As a result of this presentation that
Claudius
shows, it confuses the Elizabethan era audience because at the start of the play, Claudius is seen as a
strong and powerful character and later on drastically changes from the beginning. This trait change is
uncommon in most of ruler 's roles because most are viewed to be strong, confident and fearless.
In conclusion, as a result of Hamlet 's sinful act, it causes Claudius to become angry which
affects the audience during the Elizabethan era presenting authority, weakness, and humanity that was
grasped by him. When King Claudius hears of Hamlet 's sinful act, he plans to take revenge on Hamlet
with his partner Laertes for the murder he commits. Furthermore, at the start of the play, Claudius is
seen as an intelligent and experienced leader. Despite these traits, his true qualities are revealed when
he falls in very emotional and tough situations. Lastly, King Claudius grasps the fact that he is not
receiving anything beneficial from his actions, so he begins to feel that he needs to change. Change
happens over time; it could be something done intentionally by an individual or just a matter of an
environment one lives in. One must prepare themselves for any type of change that may occur in their
life, in order for them to be able to adapt to their new surroundings. Overall, this act was very Mashal 4
interesting and significant to the audience during the Elizabethan era because they could relate to him
at times. Whereas the King 's actions might cause the modern audience to oppose various concepts of
his presentations and feel odd about his behaviours.
