Cause Of The Civil War Essay
As a country we know that there are many reasons and situations that started the civil war. However, many continue to debate over the ultimate causes of the Civil War. James McPherson wrote that, " The Civil War started because of the uncompromising differences between the free and slave states over the power of the national government to prohibit slavery in the territories that had not yet become states (civilwar.org). After Lincoln won the election in 1860 he was the first Republican pledging to keep slavery out of the territories. It was at this time seven slave states seceded and formed a new nation, what we know as the Confederate States of America. While the concurrence succeeded in putting off hostilities between the north and south, it did little address the disparity that divided the country. Abraham Lincoln was elected by an extensive edge in 1860 despite not being on many ballots in the south. December 20, 1860, South Carolina seceded from the Union, six more states followed by the spring of 1861. With a withdrawal, many federal post, including Fort Sumner became an outpost in a foreign land. It was on April 12, 1861, Confederate warships turned back the supply convoy and opened a 34-hour assault on the post.
I believe that all the events are significant to the cause of the Civil War, slavery, a dividing government and economic issues. I would say that the beginning of the Civil War was set into motion in Jamestown, Virginia in 1619 when Dutch traders unloaded a cargo full of slaves. However it took 250 years to come down to a war, but the fact of the matter is it all began in 1619. All these issue are important to know and understand to make a better future and so none should be forgotten as they are all culprits in the making of a
