CDA Autobiography 2015
Tarra L. Stangl, Professional Childcare Provider

Growing up with my single mom who struggled to find quality, affordable care for me as I was growing up, I knew that when I married and had children, I wanted to find someone who wanted a more traditional home where I could stay at home with our kids to provide a home rooted in nurturing and security.

My first client was a single mom who needed to go on state daycare assistance to help pay for her child’s care. Knowing the struggles my own mother had, I agreed to become a registered childcare provider with the intention of helping her. I jumped into registration and began the trainings that were required by the state. I was heartbroken hearing different provider’s lack of vision for quality childcare. I was determined, “if I am going to do this, I am going to provide care with excellence.” It truly was a turning point for me.

After obtaining my Child Net Certification, I began working on my QRS rating and have maintained a QRS level 4 rating since 2009. In 2010, we moved to Cedar Rapids, and The Growing Patch flourished and became the place I envisioned, one where the children I provide care for can: grow, learn and be encouraged. In December of 2013, I received National Accreditation through NAFCC and am currently working on my next professional goal of obtaining my CDA.
How many people can honestly say they are happy and passionate about their career choice? I can! I am in awe of the wonder and excitement that children possess and I strive to provide the highest quality of care I can in an in-home setting, while offering a professional service to the community of Cedar Rapids.

Since I was a little girl, I always have had a fascination in the dental field. I was one of those rare people, who throughout my life always enjoyed going to the dentist. I was enrolled in Palomar Dental School and was scheduled to start the dental assisting program, but God had another plan. It was later that year that I finally conceived, after trying for 13 years. Because I wanted to stay home and raise my son, I could not attend school on a full-time basis. I feltl that completing my degree in the health care management field, I will be able to get my foot in the door and someday work in a dental office. I would also love to work in the pediatric field. Whether it be in the dental field of pediatrics, or in a hospital, I think working with children would be a very rewarding job. As a mother of two, I can relate to the anxiety of parents taking their children in for dental work, or healthcare, and I think it would be nice to put the parents and children at ease with my concern.…

My name is Regina Goforth-Lewis. I was born and raised in Michigan. As a young child, I went to four different elementary schools. I ended up graduating High School from the last of those schools, Southfield Christian High School. It was here that I decided I would eventually work with youth in some way. My life took a small detour before I got to that point. I attended the Oakland Community College shortly after graduating, however, decided to work full time and pursue a different career avenue: Retail Management. Although this was exciting and perfect for me at the time, I knew it was not my calling. Around the age of 22, I decided to enroll back to in college part time and follow the original dream of working with young people. I studied under the Social Work/Mental Health field. I never completed the program to receive my Associates Degree; however, I do have 66 credit hours accumulated. During this time, I loved college and my internship, which later became a fulltime job at the H.A.V.E.N. I worked there as a Supervised Visitation Specialist for many years. While working in the social work field and also in the communications field, I met and married my husband and we started a family. I always knew if it was feasible I would want to be able to stay at home with my children for as long as possible and I was fortunate enough to be able to do this for almost 13 years. Along the way I held down several part time jobs to earn extra income for the family, these jobs always included working with youth to some degree, such as a shift supervisor at the local Parks and Recreation Center’s concession stand or at the Elementary School where the children attended as a lunch room monitor. I also volunteered time at my church as a Sunday school teacher, a senior high youth advisor and a Deacon. I read to students at the library and taught American Sign Language (ASL) to hearing children. After 15 years, my children’s father and I divorced. I currently find myself as…
