A few months ago, a terrible crime happened. A lion called Cecil was murdered in a barbaric manner to please the hunters. This happened right on the outskirts of the Hwange National Park in Zimbabwe. Cecil the Lion was lured out of the National Park by a dentist called Walter Palmer and his hunting party, who had tied a dead animal to a vehicle outside of the National Park boundaries. Even though the lion was injured from the first encounter with the hunters, the party continued to hunt the animal down. It took a total of 40 hours for Cecil the Lion to die. Humans are destroying nature to build buildings, factories, roads, farms and for natural resources. By destroying nature, humans are making it harder for animals to find a new home. Most of them die by trying to find one. This is why there are National Parks in our world in order to keep a bit of nature but also to keep endangered species. Hunting is not allowed inside the boundaries, if a hunter is found he is accused for committing a crime. Another example of an almost extinct species was the White Bald Eagle in the U.S.
Another exemplification of a mutinous killing is described in “The Short Happy Life of Francis Macomber” by Ernest Hemingway, when Wilson kills the lion. Even though Macomber had shot the lion twice it wasn’t dead, and later on Wilson shot another two times. In this case, Macomber was killing the lion for pleasure and to get its skin. It is another example of a brutal murder. This story tells us that Hemingway’s themes are masculinity and cowardice, along with the coming of age that is possible through exposure to nature, together with overcoming challenges of the great outdoors.
