Atoms are made up of three particles: protons, neutrons and electrons. Protons and neutrons are heavier than electrons and reside in the center of the atom, called the nucleus. And the electrons can be found orbiting around the atoms outer shell. Atomic number = to the number of protons found in the nucleus. Atomic weight = the total mass of protons and neutrons in an atom.
3. Valence: Is the number of free electrons in an atoms outer shell. For the oxygen atom when you look at the outer shell you see 6 electrons... this means that the oxygen atom has a valence of 6. Sodium atom has 11 electrons so that means that the sodium atom will have a valence of 11.
4. Ionic bond: a chemical bond between 2 ions with opposite charges. An example would be sodium chloride.
Covalent bond: A chemical bond formed by the sharing of one or more electrons, especially pairs of electrons, between atoms. A water molecule would be an example of this because each hydrogen atom shares an electron with the oxygen atom. pH: A measure of the acidity or alkalinity of a solution. Pure water has a pH of 7, acid solutions have a pH lower than 7 and alkaline solutions have a pH higher than
